see earlier advice, in addition I would go by second class sleeper, you meet locals and they make you feel very welcome. if you only have 6 weeks, consider flying to some places (Mumbai to Goa about £15) as it can be cheaper than a 3 month railcard (try spicejet.com)

yes. u can buy one ticket valid for 3 months for the trains. it may cost u about $400 for airconditioned sleeper class. u need to make reservations. see www.indianrail.gov.in |
