Well lots been written abt india in foreign media about its safty and other issues, but being an indian and being here all my life i can tell you media mostly blow news out of proportion there are places whc are of disturbance, apart from those specific areas rest of the country is safe. And most interstingly is cheap as well, so you cld shop n hve fun till u drop dead. Lookin at it geographycially it is so vast that you cld hve mix of all most everything in the same country , starting from beaches to mountains, to desert .........well i cld keep writing abt it , but well i guess i got limited time now so cheers do lemme know if u need any help......

Where do you live mohini? Is it safe where you live? Are you sure about safety outside of India?

Well I will not give you an opinion on safety in india as you did not say where you are from but have a hindu name. It is a shame that you have to come to Yahoo to ask about safety in india.

I was lucky enough to travel in India for 6 months. I never felt safer. Where should you go?
Depends what you want. From beaches to Holy tempels, to Bustling Bombay, its gret fun. Pick up a lonely planet guide and read about the Country.
Some advice- its not a bible, its a guideTrains can get busy so try to book in advance
HAVE FUN

It can be very safe to travel in India. I spent five weeks there a couple years back. I traveled primarily in the region of Rajahstan, and also in Delhi. If I were to return, I would love to visit the cities of Chennai and Mumbai, or venture to the beaches in the south around Goa. I skipped the Taj Mahal, and I have no regrets about doing so. Look into Heritage Hotels. These are very cool as they are former homes and palaces remodeled into hotel accommodations. You can find rail and air transportation. If you want to drive, I suggest hiring a driver as the highway system is yet a little scary.

it is absolutely safe to travel alone in India.Go to kerala a southern state of India.Kerala is a must-visit destination for all of us. It is a land rich in ecological wonders, cultural wonders, and inhabited by some of the most friendly and intelligent people in the world. But Kerala is much more than simply a site-seeing adventure - it is also potentially a spiritual and intellectual adventure

Just go. Pick up books at your local library and find out what places you would like to go and read up on their history and what to see and then look at the current events section of the newspapers for that country translated to english and read what's currently going on there. There's a travel section in every library and bookstore. I suggest you go look there and on-line for all the research you need to do before going, including what time of the year to go (weather wise and financially). Good luck.

India can be a shock introduction if you are going first time by yourself , so it's nice to be with someone or meet someone there.I always say if you are okay about what you see and feel within the first 24 to 48 hrs then you have gone past the window period and you can really adapt and enjoy your trip. I've met people who came solo and completely lost it and really had a hard time because they had culture shock and quickly left after three days . Depends if you have been travelling alot and if you have been to places that tend to be chaotic, noisy, milling with people ,(sounds like a festival) .Where every corner produces a smell that completely contrasts from the gutter to the delightful food stall . If you have adventure in you then by all means go . Just be aware that you may want to get away from the cities where negotiating rickshaw drivers can drive you round the bend .Be prepared to see people who are less fortunate on the streets .Go to the mountains , or hill stations get away from the traffic pollution. As for safety just apply common sense and ensure you have essentials like eye drops (against Madras Eye) sunglasses (protects from traffic pollution) and some grapeseed extract for amoebic bugs and giardia .Look at pictures of India and see how you feel about those places too .Have a great journey .

India is very safe, I lived in Mumbai for over 25 years. But it is so vast, I would suggest visitng Rajasthan (state) and visit Jaipur, Jaiselmair, Udaipur (really good cities, with historical Forts that are way too advanced for their day and age.)
While you're there you should also check out Agra where the TAJ mahal is located, it is not far at all from Rajasthan.
Goa is filled with miles and miles of beaches.
Also a must see is south of India, my wife and I went there for our Honeymoon it is amazingly pretty.
Go to kumarakaum, thekkady etc, they have virgin forest backwaters, house boats on the lakes, and everywhere the service is like a 5 star hotel. They treat you like a king.

The places mentioned are very safe, with tons and tons of international tourists from the world, so you won't be alone.
