In my humble opinion,
AGAIN I MUST REVISE WHAT I SAY BELOW AND TAKE AC TAXIS WHEN YOU FIRST ARRIVE (If you are going soon it going to be HOT!)
After a while you'll want to get a bit bolder then follow some of the suggestions below if you like!
If it was me I'd take auto rickshaws..but I'm used to them and the pollution can really get to you now that the Indian government put in traffic lights. it's still better than being locked up in an air conditioned cab.... there were never traffic jams in New Delhi until those stupid traffic lights showed up last year, en mass. Actually the pollution has been getting less every year in Delhi thanks to the Supreme Court and the order to convert Auto Rickshaws, City Buses and Cabs to CNG (compressed natural gas).
One just does not get the feel of the city and shooing beggars away and saying 'Chello' from a closed windowed cab! Better yet for short distances take peddle rickshaws...now that's the way to see the real India.
I can tell you how to get great sigh seeing tours in auto rickshaws for free. It involves going from one government emporium (none have anything to do with the government) and spending 5 minutes at each and then going to see a sight..the rickshaw drivers gets a chit (gas, clothes, Rps) just for bringing you to the emporium (whether you buy or not)...My girlfriend and I have a wonderful auto rickshaw driver that just laughs and tells great stories and after about 4 hours of stopping in emporiums and sightseeing we give him 40RP..of course he has cleaned up at the emporiums and then he goes home a very happy man! He begs us to go whenever he sees us....It's really a gas if you find the right rickshaw walla. We try to go with this man once a year..
So hire a cab when you first arrive and then ween yourself of such unnecessary luxuries....start taking auto rickshaws and in Bazaars or for short distances by all means take a peddle rickshaw....not the new metal monsters (very uncomfortable) ask a Hindu friend to find you the old style peddle rickshaw much more comfortable.
You sit up high and can see all the sights and you can feel India rubbing and sweating all over you.
Go to Chandi Chowk and take a peddle rickshaw thought the
Kinari? Bazaar (corner market)..now that's the real India. That's the India I love and you will come to love it too!
Most auto rickshaw drivers speak enough English to get you where you want to go..
Cab Drivers speak English and wind up wanting you to sponsor them to move to America by the time you arrive....they are always in your soup...many, not all. (that's another reason I don't like cabs, I like to choose when it's time to chat.....not have chat dictated to me...Westerners feel like it's impolite not to chat..Indians just pull caste rank with a slight glance and the driver shuts right up.
Most auto rickshaw wallas speak enough English to get you to your destination....(some will sing to you..ask just for fun!.).agree on a price before departure and if he gets lost that's his problem...as long as it's his fault not yours...same applies for taxis.
Peddle Rickshaw wallas- many do not speak English just hop on and say you destination, if he does not understand, he will find someone to translate..(be sure he knows where you want to go or he will just take off in an direction..most are just boys from the country trying to make some money to take back to their village).pay 5-10 RPS per KM (I always pay peddle rickshaw wallas about 3 times the Indian rate (you fix the rate and be fair these are poor people that work like mules..often when overpaid they will kiss the money or worse try to kiss your feet.

If u really want to enjoy in Delhi take a metro train. It will get u to every good place there. My advice for u in India is not to take a cab. The drivers really fool the foreigners and will take to the most uninteresting places there. If u really want to see the Real India, go to C P in Delhi rather than south block. |

If you can afford it, that is the best way to travel. Most drivers speak english or at least understand it. ANd most travel agents can arrange it.
India is an english speaking country. People are very educated and polite.
I am not talking of the poor. The people you will meet at travel agents and hotels or at railway stations and airports.
People in India are very intelligent and most can speak more than two languages.
I wish you a good trip. |

renting a car with driver is one of the best options to travel in Delhi. that way you can relax and enjoy the sights while the driver can navigate the traffic.
An aircon ambassador/indica car would come for Rs 1000 (USD 22) for a day (8 hours/80 kms)
An aircon Sumo/Qualis/Innova (a lower model SUV) would come for around Rs 1500 (USD 33).
Please ensure that you hire the car from a Government of India approved transport operator. List of approved operators is available in the website www.tourism.gov.in (click on "approved lists" on the left frame and open the Tourist Transport Operator link.
Also, visit the Indiatourism office at 88, Janpath or their 24 hour travel information counter in the baggage claim area of arrival hall IGI Airport for advice and help with bookings |
