There is ahotel very adjacent to the Airport, will be economical and decent. But be careful with the strangers.
You can Get the Bus Just opposite to the Airport and if you just go another 3-6 kilometer there is a place called Tambaram where you can get both Bus and Train service.
You can go to Nanganallue Njeneya Temple, Vaideeswaran temple about 3 kilometer from the Airport.
You can Go to Gandhi Statue Beach, Zoo about 15 Kilometer from Airport, etc.., * |

Book a hotel at Guindy , Guindy is center place where you will get buses / train for all locations. Go to Merina or Besant Nagar at evening / Vadapalani / Nanganallur if you are spiritually interested / Head out for a cinema other wise / Or simply go a Maharaja Drive in hotel have a booz spend a day and start to kumbakonam by booking a Omni bus.
