For a personal tour guide, you need to check into any hotel and ask the concierge there to recommend some guide to you. They all have their own tie-ups with some or the other tour guide company. If you don't want to get ripped off, you should ask around at some of the neighbouring hotels, how much the tour guides recommended by them normally charge... that way you can make a smart choice.

Also, avoid the "guides"/solicitors who'll approach you at the airport... their prices are SOOO hiked up, that you won't get the advantage of a cheap Indian holiday at all.

Just come out of the airport and look totally lost and confused. Soon enough some guide will find you and everything about you, so you dont have to worry then. Thats India 4 u friend ... welcome.

First take a cab and go to a bookshop. there you will find many good books and monthly guides. from there start your tour. In India English is widely spoken so no need to worry about communication. The basic idea is to get a good hotel for your stay.

In India best tourist places are Goa and North Kerala. Mumbai and Delhi are also good. But it will be very crowded and noisy.
