If an "untouchable" in India wins the lottery and becomes rich, would he be elevated to a higher caste?

No.
Only if he moves to another city or town where he can begin a new life.

I live in India and as far as I know, 'untouchability' is a thing of the past. It does not exist any longer. I have better things to do than ask people their religions or their castes.

tdrajagopal
It is not the caste system which is not going to be bothered any more.

Now, Most of the things revolve around the status. So, if one is being in a higher caste and will be very poor will be viewed as if an untouchable. That's all.

But, the rich or poor doesn't an eligibility for being in a caste. It is decided based on birth.

in India two casts are functional in real sense, and they are the rich and the poor, and that is applicable around the world , why to single out India ???

vakayil k
First of all there is no cast as untouchable in India now. It is only lower caste and upper caste. Even if a lower caste man becomes millionaire or billionaire he will not be elevated to upper caste.

SHUBHRA (BEST)
Yes if only he moves to another city or town where he can begin a new life.

the days have changed... casts are left with very little discrimination... as in USA what is the social status of Mexicans...! however, if a Mexican has a big house, half a dozen cars, and a fat bank balance... then he would be recognised by the communities... in India also two casts are functional in real sense... and they are the rich and the poor... and that is applicable around the world... why to single out India...

Economical backwardness can be erased by the new wealth acquired. Untouchability is based on social backwardness ( as part of the caste system practiced in Hindu community) .It is based on whose worm one has taken birth.
Theoretically, untouchability extends up to death .
But this untouchability in India is not followed now in many States. Only in educationally backward areas of some States and by very limited perverts of caste Hindus, it is being followed. However law prohibits such practice .

black snake
No he cant because he needs to be born a higher cast.

in india the caste system is supposed to be illegal -
it still exists disgustingly
i expect he would move to another area or change religion -
no-one is untouchable - disgusting - we are all human beings.
ps i know it still exists been to india loads and complained in a cafe where a smalll boy had to stay on his hands and knees with a cloth and wipe the floor when any stood on it - when i questioned the manager her said he was an untouchable and should be luck for a job - i told him to get him a bucket and mop and he said that the boy would then have elevated status - oh my god - ps - we distracted manager and gave the boy maybe 9!!!! a tip worth more than
a months wage. - it is illegal and it still happens

PnkFlr
No. He will be elevated to a higher ''class'' though.

No, he will not be elevated to higher class but his class will be elevated.

prerana
The 'untouchable' thing is not existent in India now as far as I know it.

But since the question has to have an answer, here it is:
He may not get elevated to a higher caste, but may get elevated to a higher position in 'society'. If he becomes richer, the people around him would probably forget that is an untouchable, and he becomes a touchable :-) After all, his money is not untouchable, right?
