If one were to visit India for the first time what would be the most important places to visit?

Excluding the places everyone says like the taj mahal, are there great shrines, battlefields like Pannyput (sp), beaches like goa etc that one would recommend. I have heard of them but obviously never seen them. thanks in advance PS has anyone been on the rajisthan train? what was that like and do you also recommend that as a must do?

The sun temple at Konark in Orissa, Sikkim in the month of April when all the flowers bloom, Sunderbans in West Bengal, Udaipur Lake Palace and City Palcae in Rajasthan, Meenakshi temple in Maduarai in Tamil Nadu, Daulatabad fort and Ajanta and Ellora caves from Aurangabad in Maharashtra, Khajuraho temple in Madhya Pradesh, Golden temple in Amritsar in Punjab, Lal Quilla (Red Fort) in Delhi, Imambara in Lucknow in UP. The list is endless. Maybe you can think of what are you interested in first and then work it out. I myself has seen quite a few of these and would like to see some more. Rajasthan is very nice and yes it has to be recommended. I am from India and a very warm welcome to you.

Temples in Tamil Nadu, the scenic beauty of Kerala, palaces in different places like Udaipur, Mysore etc, historical monuments in places like Delhi, Hyderabad etc,. Sculptures of Hampi, Mahabalipuram etc are some of the things you can see. Other than these places, if you are in India during some festival you will enjoy the taste of Indian culture and celebrations in that place, like Diwali (falls in october or November of every year), Kite festival in Gujarat, Onam in Kerala, Bihu in Assam, Dushera, Holi in many places or even a wedding in Punjab.

If you are visiting India for the first time then try n do one thing , (it may seem to you very odd ). Try to make friend someone like me who like to converse very much or the person u r in good contact with. Stay in his home with him and his family try n make good contact with peole all around & make friends. This would tell u what does a family mean to an indian . U will not only have knowledge but a deep and true experience of its culture and tradition, that no body else could ever had. By this you would get to know India better than by doing any thing else. There are lot more ideas popping in my mind .they r coming up slowly . for now u r welcome to India. (more on email)

It all depends on where you are going to be and how long you have to travel, plus what your budget is. However, I would highly recommend Kerala if you are going to be in the south, in the north check out Dehra dun or especially Haridwar. In the foothills of the Himyleyas on the Ganges with great temples, river blessing ceremonies every night, head out in the early morning to see the wild elephants, keep your food locked up so the monkeys don't get into it, roam the evening markets, eat great hot street food, I love the north! Also, my favorite big city is Kolkata (Calcutta). But big cities are really exhausting, and if you don't know the place or have a really good guide you can spend a whole day just trying to get somewhere. Hope this helps, have a great trip!

Yes, India has great fascinating tourist destinations more than Taj at Agra,Gate way of India at Mumbai,Red fort at Delhi...etc.The ministry of Indian Railways one of the largest railway net work in the World has excellent luxury trains called Wheels on Palace which runs through graet places like Jaipur,Udaipur,...in Rajasthan to visit great marble palaces , forts ..You can browse through web site on Indian Railways to get more and intersting features on such information...

I went to Orissa the last time I was in India and loved it. Try to time it so you are in Puri for the Rath Yatra or car festival when the lord Jaggernath is paraded through the streets amid a massive parade and festival. I have been all over the world and seen some pretty crazy things but that festival took the cake as far as exoticness (if thats a word). You can also visit tribal areas in southern orissa, way off the beaten path and well worth it....

The backwaters of Cochin in Kerala are absolutely breathtaking.

I just came back from there a week ago. I went with my family and we stayed on a houseboat for a day on a lake in Kochi.
