If you could only visit 3 cities in India, which would they be?

Distance between them shouldn't be a determining factor...

I have to admit, I would have given the same answer that doc gave. Except for the third one. While the first two will cover the diversity and beauty of India and the third one shows you Indian culture, the problem is that it is artificial. Palace on wheels will give you a luxury trip in the state of Rajasthan and show you the time of the Maharajahs and if you can afford it you will love it. But real India is in the streets. I hate luxury Hotels and love roaming around on my own. Rajasthan is beautiful though.

1) Kovalam (Kerala) - Beautiful 'quite' beaches)
2) Leh, Ladakh (Jammu & Kashmir)- Himalayas at its best.

&

3) Udaipur, Rajasthan - City of lakes and palaces. I enjoyed my time there and around it.

Bombay- exciting nightlife, great restaurants

Jaisalmer- colorful, full of hospitable people, the fort is spectacular and almost 1000 years old... and people still live in it!

Udaipur- the Lake Palace is gorgeous

Three different cities (state in brackets and you wont beleive that you are in one country thats how much differnet they are from each other.

1) Kovalam (Kerala) - Beautiful 'quite' beaches)
2) Leh, Ladakh (Jammu & Kasmir)- Himalayas at its best.
3) And a trip on Palace on Wheels (Rajasthan)- Thar desert region with rich culture.

Depends on whether it is the first time you are visiting India or not! India presents an amazing variety and it would be unfair to try to restrict your trip to only three cities. :-) If you held a gun to my head for the three absolutely must see cities, my answer would be as follows.

I agree with the above two posters on Udaipur. It is an amazingly beautiful city. Not to be missed!

In addition, I would suggest -
* Delhi. Yes it is a metropolis. Yes it is crowded. Yes the people are all in-your-face. But it is one city that will certainly give you such insight in and a feel of the quintessential north indian way of life as no other city could offer. And it has loooooads of history to boast of. You will not tire of seeing its various monuments and hearing all sort of legends and anecdotes.
* Madurai - second largest city of the south indian state of Tamil Nadu. Get a flavour of the Dravidian culture and heritage here.

Please note that I have tried not to give you the oft-quoted sites like those of Kerala, Goa, etc. They are so popular, they are commercialized to death. If you want to experience the soul of India, look beyond the obvious.

india's too huge for you to try and cover three cities far from each other.. if you really wish to visit some really nice places try to stick to one region and you'll find great diversity nonetheless... i give you northern india

Agra... none other than the Taj and a whole host of historical monuments.

Rishikesh.. amazing place for spiritual stuff.. water sports, ganga.. and what not..

Leh Ladakh.. my original choice was Srinagar and Gulmarg in Kashmir but not a great place for a tourist these days..
