Information about tourist places is available in tourist guide books and websites. Whenever you go to different regions, you should enquire about their local food and fruits. Some places are famous for handicraft items, clothes, leather articles, craft articles, metal items etc. You should buy such items as momentos of your visit. Never handover your tickets, passport to strangers, if someone approaches you for currency conversion at cheaper rates then beware of such people. Never take lift from strangers and dont get along with un-known persons and un-known places. Always travel in group or be in the company of known persons... For private transport, please get it arranged from your hotel etc. where the persons are know and you are safe. before visiting any region, understand the local climatic conditions, habitat, local people etc. and get acquanted with general practices of the community there.... welcome to India... |

Well, Simy, I'm originally from LA, so when people tell me about India, they tell me to visit the Taj Mahal, of course. And they also tell me not to eat roadside food, only homecooked. |

The list of places to visit would be very long, and timing should coincide with good weather, as these days summer/rains and resulting humidity are not the best ones. Avoid spicy and hot foods. |

There are too many places to see to make any recommendations here. First time travelers should absolutely refer to a travel book that will outline the major tourist stops. I would recommend the Fodor's Guide to India.
Some general tips though for travelers with limited time and budget:
1. pick a region carefully. Each region of India is almost like a different country, with its own very distinct cuisine, culture and attitudes.
2. when in doubt, underplan your itinerary. Given the sheer number of things to see, its normal for tourists to stuff as much as possible in a few days. But, remember that transportation in India IS the adventure (and frequently an irritating one). If a map says something is 30 mins away, plan for it being 2 hrs.
2. learn a little bit of the local language of that region. It will help greatly in navigating. Getting lost in India's decrepit road and address system is a guarantee. Ask at ur hotel for directions. If flying solo on the road, try to ask directions from ppl with a bit more professional attire, as the chances are far greater they will speak English. Trust me, this is really huge.
3. stay vegetarian. The chances of contracting a nasty food illness gets greatly reduced. Remember, make sure that all food is cooked through (that includes boiled water). Luckily, India is a largely veggie country so its actually easier being one over there.
4. Pricing is a fluid concept in India. Prepare to be "sized-up" on your income at every commercial transaction. Taxis, rickshaws, stalls and stores will typically charge a foreigner rate (especially for travelers coming from western nations) that is up to 5x what a local would pay. It is up to you to haggle down. Rule of of thumb- pay only 1/4 of what you are charged in a negotiating situation, and confirm this before you use the service. |
