You don't say if you are from the UK or US. From the UK you can get a 6 month visa which will be valid from the day you get it so if you are planning on going for a long time leave it until close to your departure date. You can apply either in person at the Indian High Commission (London, Birmingham & I think Glasgow). It costs Â£30.
If you are from the US then I understand you can get a 10 year visa though each stay should not exceed 6 months - don't know the cost.
On vaccinations the ones you REALLY need are:
Up to date tetanus/polio/dyptheria combined jab and valid for 10 years.
Hepititis A
Typhoid
On Malaria tablets it's up to you, I travel in India a lot and don't take them as I hate the side effects (nightmares/nausea/hair loss) but have a look into it and decide for yourself.
First piece of advice is to try to get a flight that arrives in the morning - much less hassle for your first time in an Indian city.
Here's a list of my must-see places:
North India (arriving Delhi);
Rajasthan - especially Jaisalmer (fairytale walled city in the desert) & Udaipur (the one with the lake palace).
Varanasi - where they burn bodies on the ghats on the banks of the Ganges.
Agra - for the Taj Mahal though I would do this on a day trip from Delhi as Agra is a hell hole to stay in.
Mid India
Ajanta & Ellora cave temples - breathtaking sculpture.
Mumbai - for a couple of days of the Bollywood experience - it is pricey though.
South India
Goa for the beaches and a rest from all the travelling
Hampi - ancient ruins and incredible landscape
Madurai - probably the most spectacular temple in India
Kerala - backwater trips and tropical paradise.
If you are budget travelling then you can get by staying in reasonable places, eating well, train 2nd class sleeper on around Â£10 ($20) a day.
I like to treat myself every now and then and sometimes even take internal flights and budget Â£100 a week and always have some left.

your doctor will tell you which vaccinations to have (you do need them) also anti malaria tablets you also need a visa ask your travel agent about these we travelled around Goa in India its a fantastic place people were so friendly lots of poverty in some areas but fantastic scenery make sure you go to the night markets all sorts of bargains ...always haggle but don't forget these people need to make a living ....lots of begging but just say no firmly and walk away some will persist and follow just ignore and they get fed up ,we visited fantastic temples... orphanages (try take coloured pencils or other small items for the kids) beautiful beaches, taxis are cheap get the drivers to take you to interesting places of there choice just make sure you agree a price upfront, food is good and cheap we were there over a month back packing and not once got an upset tummy , just treat people well and they will go out of there way for you .hope that helps... enjoy... :)

I suggest you know a little about the religion that is practiced there. You might want to research Hinduism. Cows are sacred in India and so is water (esp. The Ganges River).
