I agree with Riya's Boy
India is one of the beautiful countries in the world
Slumdog Millionaire portrays India in one of the most negative ways possible
India is Fairly Wealthy and Growing. It is one of the largest industrial countries in the world.
Though the movie may be true in one of the most horrific ways, India is not extremely dangerous.
India is somewhat dangerous, but kidnappings or other stuff is likely anywhere in the world even in the USA
Also there is likely no terrisom in India otherwise from the conflict with Pakistan |

The Slumdog has done a great job in showing the ground reality happening in India, but what we Indians dislike about this movie is it has portrayed only the negative things. First of all i don't understand what made them to name the movie ''SlumDOG'', the name itself gives the negative image at the beginning.
There is nothing positive about the film and it seems that a deranged sadist has painted his insecure negative self in each and every character of the movie. It illogically shows every negative thing about India happening in the protagonist's life... slums, open-air lavatories, riots, underworld, prostitution, brothels, child labour, begging, blinding and maiming of kids to make them into 'better beggars', petty peddlers, traffic jams, irresponsible call centre executives… everything apart from western paedophiles roaming around in Indian streets!! And its winning of so many awards and nominations only goes on to prove strongly that the paradigm of cinema and recognition of films are in the hands of a few retarded imperialistic minds. It's a crying shame that our media hasn't seen through this ruse and is touting "Slumdog's" nominations to claim that India is shining at the Oscars, while in fact, it is lauding a film that mocks and ridicules the idea of 'India', pigeonholing its identity into the straitjacket of depraved poverty for a global audience. |

i can assure you if India was in the slightest dangerous...i would not be returning next year for our 6th annual holiday there. it is VERY safe...& it is beautiful...we go to Goa. fabulous beaches, good food & wonderful friendly people. everybody lives together in harmony there...Hindu, Muslim, Catholic...everyone.
there is poverty in the towns but tourism has created pockets of wealth in certain areas which is good for the local people as it gives them work & money. go & see India...you will love it...promise!! |

there is a lot of wealth in the country (the biggest middle class in the world- approx 300 million with disposable income of over 40,000 USD- as according to the magazine "India today"), and there is a great deal of poverty. Like in the UK, the USA and Europe the wealthy are very very comfortable. Unlike the UK, the poor are poor with a capital P.
There are millions of people living and dying on less than a dollar a day, without a permanent roof over their heads, without fresh running water, without refrigerators.
Going back to your question, I think India is one of the safest countries in the world, and if you really are interested I would suggest you go over there, its fantastic |

In fact, Western Imperialism has nothing to do with India today.
The overwhelming poverty in India is not unlike all of the the third world, read Developing, countries. However, it is the sheer volume, the enormous population of India, that transforms its rather status-quo poverty into the millions and millions of people living in desperate conditions as depicted in Slumdog. Mumbai has much in common with Mexico City. And India has much in common with Mexico. Very low literacy rates, massive poplution displacement from rural villages to cities with little to no education, no discernible skills, and less than acceptable urban hygiene, widespread political corruption, and the remnants of a once-powerful caste system comingle with vast overseas investment largely in the form of outsourced call center and IT jobs, and upper-class million and billionaires.
Mumbai, I am told by those who have been, is far far worse than depicted in Slumdog. There are, according to these, quite literally, rivers of human waste rolling through the cities. These rivers are hardly noticed by the middle and upper classes, who actually employ drivers and servants (yes, servants) and are ushered past most of the refuse from gleaming building to protected American-style gated communities. Ask a resident of Mumbai who is a middle class person and they might even be shocked or offended you would imply their city has any more poverty problem than say, Chicago.
..but they would be horribly, horribly incorrect.
Good luck on your research. |

We have some extremes.
On one hand you have the World's richest people, on the other Slum dwellers.
In fact those slum dwellers are better off than some poor farmers in Villages.
Slums mean they have left their home town or Village to work in a City. They have something back home, wherever.
But villagers live in poverty.
It is safer in villages than in slums. |

the movie portrayed the life in one of the world's largest slums, DHARAVI in mumbai. so it doesn't mean that life in other parts of india is the same . its a very large country with a population of 1.2. billion, so economic disparities are bound to be there. i can assure you that most parts of india are not 'dangerous' ,except a few places like kashmir, assam etc. india isn't wealthy either.but it's the second fastest growing economy, after china
