This question could really be a great topic for an essay write-up, however I will try to make this simple and brief.
Worst โ The Perspective โ You are most likely to arrive India through one of the major international airports. The first thing a westerner will look/feel is the number of people waiting outside the airport. Once you step out of the airport and the number people living in the city stun travelling anywhere one. It is an absolutely chaotic culture shock. The driving โ well lets say that the lanes are more efficiently used (4 vehicles in a 2 lane road). The second thing that one notices is the unbelievable poverty, pollution and garbage on the streets. The cities are more polluted than the countryside. Assuming you have planned your trip properly โ I will not go into details of taxi driver, theft stories โ but in reality itโs mostly safe. Western woman should dress conservatively โ but that should be common sense not attract unnecessary attention.
Best โ The Perspective โ You are most likely to find everything cheap, which a string people have responded. Well the best part is dwelling into the culture. If one would plan their trip right โ be ready to get a load of colors, customs and traditions. I recommend to indulge into the local dance festivals (BTW โ Indians love to dance). The food โ plenty of fantastic places to eat different taste โ one thing that I believe westerners miss out in their home country โ remember the spices are better than KFC. The scenic spots are as diverse as the size of the country. To name a few โ Taj Mahal, Tea Gardens of Nilgiri and Darjeeling, Bengal Tiger Forest Reserves, Kama Sutra Temple, Royal Trains of Rajasthan, Yoga resorts in Kerala and plenty of palaces and landmarks. The people are mostly friendly โ willing to help - everyone speaks at least broken English well enough to smoothen your travel.
Conclusion โ India is not for the faint of heart. If you a relaxing sunny by the beach do nothing โ I recommend Hawaii. If you want adventure and want to taste culture without predicaments โ India is your destination |

I have never ever heard that saying and have spent about 1 year in India over the last three years. But as one of the answerer's suggests it could be because ts such a fascinating country with wonderful people, however you are exposed to terrible poverty. I would however say India was and is the best ever Country I have had the good fortune to visit. |

I am currently traveling in India for 10 months and I would never say its the 'worst travel one can make'. I have met many foreigners that did not like their stay in India or are at least very relieved to leave and I think its a combination of many things.
India is such a massive country and has such a rich past with so many different surviving cultures. It is hard for a tourist, with a limited time, to really get under the surface and understand that, let alone appreciate it. Most can only see the top level - beautiful buildings like the Taj mahal and Merengargh Fort, delicious foods and perhaps a national park or beach resort depending on your itinerary but they also see all of these wonderful things surrounded by too many people, garbage and dirt everywhere, animals and their remains everywhere and too much traffic and pollution. Intense is truly an understatement when it comes to india.
I absolutely love india so far. I have been here for 5 months now, learned some of the language (which is difficult!) and met a lot of really nice people. Indian hospitality is unparalleled. I have seen the mountains and lakes and palaces and villages... but not every visitor is lucky enough to have enough time to really SEE India. |

Well, I'll start with the worst and end on a good note! It can be one of the worst places because coming from "the west" it is a CRAZY country. There's a totally different driving system, cars weave in and out of the right and wrong lanes, beeping is incessant, it's loud, congested and sometimes life-threatening! People are so different, they often have views of western girls as easy because of what they see in movies, and many Indian men stare or say things that they would never dream of saying to an Indian girl. Which is totally unfair without knowing the girl's personal code of morals. I was groped in Goa, asked if i was a virgin in Delhi and numerous other little offences. It's also extremely dirty, I tried to find a trash can once and asked a shop keeper to throw my rubbish away - he threw it on the street! And last but certainly not least, the poverty is difficult to deal with. I hated seeing poor families huddled outside fancy extravagant malls. It seems that India is trying to run before it can walk - deal with poverty first, then the superfluous malls.
Now - the good!!!! :) I stayed in India for 15 months because - I loved the culture shock - it's funny to find out about a new culture and other ways of living. You're more free in India to wear - say - a blanket instead of a jacket in winter, clothes in any colour that may not necessarily match and you dont have to worry who looks, coz they do anyway :). It's a huge and diverse country so you can see the himalayas, desert, backwaters, beaches, tea plantations - you name it! I love the music, it's great to dance to. The partying is great :) The food is delicious (in good restaurants and homes - not really everywhere!). And I suspect that other's like it because it's easy to get by with English language, as a lot of people speak it, and it's quite cheap.

tourism is meant for understanding different cultures over and above sight-seeing. So if one does not like culture, he is at a fault.
Unplanned tour to a big country like india can result into some troubles. A properly planned to any place can be a wonderful experience if one has inclination. |

Travel is relitivley cheap. There are incredible places to visit. Great people, culture, history. Very interesting. However, traveling in India is really only for the adventerous. Most parts are extremely crowded and dirty. There is a lot of poverty and it is also hard for some tourists to find there way around and communicate with people.
So it really just depends on the tourist. |
