I lived in India for 3 years and loved it, I studied Yoga, Ayuveda and music. It was a little difficult at first, but then once you adjust to it (India does not adjust to you, you have to adjust to it), its a wonderful place. I describe life in India as full color TV, whereas living in the west is like living in black and white, its somehow less.
If you are going to live in India you will have visa problems, it is not easy to get a resident visa.(as an American you can get a 10 year tourist visa, but you still have to leave every 6 months) I had to leave the country every 6 months, usually I would just go to Nepal. Which is pretty easy if you live in North India. Not so easy from South India, then you can fly to Sri Lanka.
I like the south better, it is cleaner, less crowded and the food is better. But there are many interesting places up north too, its just a little harder. I would suggest travelling around a lot before deciding on anywhere to settle down.
If you are not going for spiritual reasons, you will end up being there for spiritual reasons eventually. The west is materially rich, India is spiritual rich. But be careful, there are many people there who prey on those seeking the spiritual. My advice, be patient and don't jump into anything. Read Karma Kola, Holy Cow, Are You Experienced, A Fine Balance, ect.
Good luck whatever you end up doing? If you have a way to live in India, than I would say go for it. India is a life changing experience, everyday is an adventure. As they say, "Everything is possible in India!" and its absolutely true. |

Hi there. Some parts of India are nice, some are slums. You'd need a fair amount of money to live in the nicer parts of India, but I wouldn't recommend it seeing as the locals don't take kindly to foreigners living in their country.
Where abouts in America do you live? It seems you prefer the warmer climate, hence moving to India. If you don't already live somewhere warm, try moving to the coast. Again, its pricey in some areas.
I went to Canada recently. It was freezing, but really lovely. Its a great place to live, if you can afford it, and you probably could. |

India is a developing country. The cost of living is less there but the traffic is kind of bad there. Still its not that bad of a place to live. I lived with my grandparents there for 2 months and it was fun. They have a lot of the same things we do here like pizza hut and mcdonalds. Also they sell PS2 there.
The weather there is good in the winter because it is around 60 degrees F during the day even in december. But during the summer it gets really hot.
The best place in india to live is chandigarh. Its not that polluted and crowded as the other cities and its very modern. I went to stay there.
But america and canada are better places to overall live. They are developed countries. I live in USA now.
But I am not sure how it is for a foreigner to live there. When I went there I only saw 1 foreigner at the train station. People might rip you off when buying something since they know you are from another country. Then again its becoming a developed country slowly so it might have changed since when I went there in 2001 |

Hello. First of all, I would like to know why you want to shift to India. If it is for any spiritual reasons, definitely India is the best place in the world. In that case serene places like Haridwar, Rishikesh, Indore, Kashi, Nashik, Uttarkashi would be best places to stay. You may also stay in any small village on the banks of River Narmada
If spirituality is not your aim and still you wish to stay in India, best places would be Chandigarh, Pune, Bangalore, Nagpur, Vishakhapatnam, Pondicherry or Vadodara ( Baroda). Avoid metros.
As far as comforts are concerned, USA and Canada would be comfortable than India.
As an Indian, I would welcome you to India and please let me know if you need any more information about India. |
