Punjabi is derived from PUNJAB (land of five rivers), an area that is part of Pakistan and India.
Hence the people living in Punjab are called Punjabi. Also the Native language of the Punjab is called Punjabi. Sooo... both the people living in Punjab and the language spoken in Punjab are called Punjabi.
No it's not a religion at all. Punjabi's could be Muslims (in Pakistan side) Sikh's or Hindu's (in Indian Side)

Residents in the Pakistani side are almost all Muslim.
(I think that's why your friend said it)
Those in the Indian side are mostly Sikh with a large Hindu minority. |

Yes, Punjabi is a religion. The ppl there are also called Punjabis. I am not sure if all punjabis are muslims coz my friend is a punjabi and she's not a muslim. I believe punjabis can be hindus or muslims. |
