I'm surprised by the other responses, they all seem to imply that this is a somewhat stupid question whereas there are many countries in this part of the world that do not require a visa for an American citizen. Thailand, Bali, Indonesia, Sri Lanka to name a few do not require a visa for US citizens. (they just give it to you at airport).
Your tourist visa can be had from the nearest India consul...New York on the East Coast and I'm not sure about west coast San Francisco or LA.
Be sure to mail return receipt required. Mail you passport early....
Do goggle search on India Consulate and once there you can download and print the forms you will need to fill out and send with passport and you will need to include 2 passport photos. The last time I did this it was about $40 US.
I bought a 10 year visa for 120-150$...which is a mystery even to immigrations in India (they don't really see them). The consulate does not advertise them either. But since I go to India 3 months every year I'm saving about $250 over the 10 year period. With a ten year visa, I just get on the plane and go..no more worrying is the postal service going to lose my passport.
You can easily get an extension over the 90 restriction Extensions can be had all over India and 100% in any major city...once I was on a 90 visa and I got extensions for 1 1/2 years.....
Good Luck (any other questions regarding India travel just post and I'd be glad to give a detailed answer)

Yes. I am a US citizen and I have a 10 year multiple entry visa. I can only stay for 6months or less on each visit. Think it cost about 150$. There are multiple types of visas.
You will need to work with the closest Indian Embassy/Consulate to get it.
Here's a link to get you started...: http://www.indianembassy.org/newsite/passport&visa.asp |

YES OF COURSE!
U.S. citizens require a passport and visa to enter and exit India for any purpose. Visitors, including those on official U.S. government business, must obtain visas at an Indian Embassy or Consulate abroad prior to entering the country, as there are no provisions for visas upon arrival. Those arriving without a visa are subject to immediate deportation. The U.S. Embassy and Consulates in India are unable to assist when U.S. citizens arrive without visas. Each visitor should carry photocopies of the bio-data page of the traveler’s U.S. passport and the page containing the Indian visa in order to facilitate obtaining an exit visa from the Indian government in the event of theft or loss of the passport.
Americans who wish to visit India are responsible for requesting the correct type of visa from the Indian Embassy or Consulate. |
