Is a month traveling to India long enough? |
Hey everyone,
I am looking to go to India for about a month this summer. I plan on making it to Delhi, Amritsar, Rishikesh, Jaipur, Agra, Varanasi, Gaya, Kolkata, Hyderabad, Chennai, Bangalore, Goa, and Mumbai. Maybe averaging about 2-3 days in each, (the bigger cities id spend around 4 days, and the smaller ones, maybe 1.) I also plan on using the railway system through everything. Can this be done? Or am I giving myself too little time to do it all?
Thanks |

Considering the the places you want to cover, one month is enough if you travel by air. If you planning to Travel by rail system, you need at least a week more and make sure you plan to travel by night trains, so you can save money on hotel rooms and also save time. If you want to complete all these places within a month. Make sure you make a better rout and avoid day time travel, so you can complete travel within a month.
I will suggest following itinerary, but is very busy itenerary and you ahve to take all night trains.
Delhi 3 days, leave for Amritsar on night train.
Amritsar 1 day leave for Rishikesh by Air
Rishikesh 1 day leave for Varanasi by night train
Varanasi 1 day leave for Gaya by night train
Gaya 1 day leave for Kolkota by night train
Kolkota 3 days leave for Agra by Air
Agra 1 day... no trian for jaipur. Take a one way taxi or luxury bus. extra travel day
Jaipur 3 days, leave for Chennai by flight. Could be vis Mumbai.
Chennai 3 days and leave for Banglore by night train
Banglore 3 days leave for hydrabad by night train.
Hydrabad 3 days leave for Goa by night train may be not available, so go by air.
Goa 3 days leave for Mumbai by night train
Mumbai 3 days
If you mix up your travel by air and night train, and spend only 3 days in big cities, Still you are @ 30 days.
If you want to cover everything by train and want 4 days in big cities, you will have to have 6 weeks.
I would suggest 2 to 3 days in big cities are enough.
Good Luck. |

1 month is not enough. at the end of ur trip u will be exhausted as it takes a lot of effort travelling to so many places in 30 days. the total distance u will have to cover is ridiculus in such a short time. u will be spending 20 days on road to visit these places unless if u use air transport. u shud keep aside 1 week including journey time for each place or u will miss out on many things. |

Answer to your question is YES.
Booking through railway in advance might be a challenge for you. You can do it online, but you may not know the best route/ trains etc.
Get your self familier with the class - sleeper/ AC 2/AC 3/AC 1 and Non ac 1st class.
Also chair car.
Fast trains or typical slow train etc.
www.irctc.co.in is for booking the ticket and also check the timing etc.
There is one more site i found today, its good as a reference of trains available - www.nearhop.com (donot book thro this site, i am not sure how one can do that)
All the best. |

that's the minimum, i'd say, and not really enough time to visit all those places.
remember that, for example, kolkatta and goa are thousands of miles apart, and unless you're flying everywhere, it will day 18-20 hours on a train, just for that one trip. as you have it, you'll spend more time on the train than off it, practically.
i would say to narrow it down. south or north, east or west.
if it's your first time there, do the delhi-agra-jaipur triangle, go further into the desert if you like jaipur. then go north, to himachal pradesh in the mountains, for dharamsala and manali. i know they're not on your list, but still, the himalaya are awesome.
or head south; fly into mumbai and head down the coast (don't miss hampi along the way), down into goa, and further down into kerala.
or your third choice might be chennai or kolkata to rishikesh, varanasi, gaya, those inland cities.
that's more do-able.
and i'd almost say to spend even more time in the smaller places. cities are cities, the real charm of india are the smaller towns. |

You can do it all in 30 days but frankly, 30 days is not enough to see all these beautiful places. If you want to do the touristy stuff and say I have seen this and that and I went to x number of cities you cane do it but you will be exhausted if you are planning to use railways..lets just say its not one of the most organised way to do things and way too slow for your schedule. for eg- In Amristar and Agra you can spend a day or two (maximum) I don't know your interests but Rishikesh is beautiful and I would spend 4-5 days there.. The places you picked cover all sides on India...just be safe and enjoy!! |

Its enough time, you just have to be very careful with time because there might be some cities or places you could not visit... some of the cities are very far away from the others, so i recommend staying less than 3 days in each one... you can perfectly see all the culture of a city in 3 days or less ;)
Goodluck in your trip!
India is gorgeous! |
