Amritsar, popularly known as a holy city in Punjab, close to Wagha border with Pakistan, has ancient history. It is most famous for "Harmandir Sahib" or Golden Temple, besides other places of worship in and around the city. It is popular among Punjabi folks irrespective of their religion.
The city has age old SMEs engaged in textile and woolen, once upon time one of the most sought after area for its products. Gradually it has lost its sheen and now visited for the people more for pilgrimage, watching Wagha Border drill every evening and a little for business.
The city is now divided between old city and new Amritsar, the main railway line serving the border line. The residents are lively, friendly and fun loving as known for ages.
It is very well connected with road, rail and air with international airport. Its local markets are flourishing as money and wealth has never been a limiting factor.
All said, the city has to put on extra endeavours to play a more significant role on the national scene. Avenues are plenty to explore, yet somehow the pace is not picking up. |

The city of Amritsar itself is not much to boast about. Dirty and crowded...The people are mostly Punjabi and there are many Sikhs Sikhs are very nice, friendly and generally very intelligent people. And they are Very Good businessmen.
But; The Golden Temple rivals the Taj Mahal for pure beauty and better yet The Golden Temple is a holy place so the vibes are awesome. It is truely a jaw dropping experince: beautiful and amazing. Anyone can stay at a Gurdwala (a free hotel on the grounds of the Temple) for 3 days. Ask to stay in a newer Gurdwala (they are like any 3 star hotel). You are required to leave a nominal damage deposit (when I went it was 50RP). You can also eat for free. Every day 30,000-40,000 people (Pilgrims) are feed at The Golden Temple. When we left we just donated the deposit as is the custom. At night everyone gets into a procession and goes on a bridge and goes into the Temple. Don't be shy GO!
Also, not far from The Temple is the park where many were killed by the British....It's sad and depressing but if you know Indian history it was that act that convinced Gandhi that he must shut down the entire country and he did. it was a turning point in India's struggle for Independence.
Then you can hike to the Pakistani border and watch the changing of the guards..The Indians guards make obsurd comical gestures to the Pakistani guards and vise versa. It's a riot, I was on the ground with laugther. It might have stopped due to the recent datante!
Have a great time (I spend 3 months every year in India).
