Its a taboo.
Its changing slowly - till date not fully acceptable.
However I dated my present wife 20 years back with both the parents' permission and we never faced any problem or criticism !

Traditionally dating is considered as against the culture of India, since more and more people have started following western culture, it is becoming common in the cities of late.

Dating is taboo in India.
Here stress is given on getting good grades and a good education rather than getting to know members of the opposite sex. Our values here are different.
Though now things are changing,but dating especially amongst young teenagers is looked down at.
Earlier arranged marriage was the norm, now gradually love marriages are getting acceptance in Indian society.
Parents here feel dating would spoil their child. Those who date do it on the sly.
Girls known to be friendly with boys are regraded as being of loose character.
Parents control their children's lives, for the better of the child.
Unlike the west Indian children stay with their parents until they are married and some continue to do so even after.
Children do not have to earn their own pocket money or work their way to college. In India parents save for a child's education.
Marriages are also paid for by parents, not the girl and boy.

Yep....its still an 'underground' thing - and frowned upon , but i think its more dangerous that way , you get alot of abandoned babies...sad
