Is it bad to give beggars in India money?

I always feel so bad when I see them when I visit India, but all of my relatives say that we should not give them money. What does everyone think?

Most beggars have made it their business to beg. There is no dearth of work. Unskilled blue collar jobs are available in the country, but some choose to just beg rather than earn an honest living.
It is also true that beggars seen with small children actually hire these infants from someone else.
There have been many cases reported of beggars having flats and a hefty bank balance.

Read this page, this is just one article there are many more -

well I havent been to india, I live in SaudiArabia, but we have street beggars also.. and I do not give to them.. Its a profession to them.. they have no intention what so ever to get a legitamite job.. Some brag about how much money they actually make from begging.. I was appauled when one lady was sitting out front a grocery store with a little baby in her arms and that baby (girl) had gold earing bobs and a gold bangle bracelet. I gave her a few choice words and showed her that my own little girl did NOT flaunt gold on her body and how dare she beg with gold on her. I pointed her to the nearest gold shop and told her to sell it... .. Those street beggers are mostly scum.. this is their job.. They dont want to work.. if you lived there and actually offered them a legit job, like cleaning your lawn, or washing your car, or mopping a house or something, you'll bet that they will decline. they dont want menial labor... theyd rather beg..
note: I do however give to the local charities that I know for sure will give the money to the most needed

I think offering food to the beggar would be a better option, and if you have the time I would even taken him to a grocery store and let him buy food items that he needs for his family. It would rather make me happy that the money was wisely used and not spent on liquor and his kids go empty stomach. Nobody has time this days to go to that extent but the happiness that you get is very rewarding.

It's always nice to help people, and to help the less unfortunate. They might say that because some beggars might be fake. I feel bad too when I see people like that.

it is very bad habit. we are encouraging these people to make money by begging only and not work for money. I hope the practice of giving alms stops.

Harsh...!
We should not give alms to baggers...
There are many baggers in India... However, I have seen baggers in US also... Please do not single out India... talk about baggers as a whole… in general…

Hi..majority of them are fakes..some of them even have bank accounts! in delhi begging is illegal, but you are rarely caught for it, as they have tie ups with cops. The best way to give them something is to give them food-- like biscuits, or a meal from a street shop if u are in the market etc.alot of them use the money for buying drugs, and give it away to their bosses/parents. So the best way to give something, if u want to, is to give something "in kind".

You can ask them to clean the car or clean the street before handing over money.
I remember 10 years back I refused to give money to a 12 year old, she spat on my 2-wheeler.
8 years back I gave 2 rupees to a 12-13 year old guy, he licked the coin and threw it on my face. I sincerely feel that we should stop giving the money.
Instead we can donate money to orphanages or oldage home and encourage the beggers to get admitted to such institutions.

Just like few ones contribute large amount in spoiling country's image so does this. "Fake" beggars annoy people a lot. But there are really poor individuals who needs your financial support (at least, if you can not afford to contribute in any other way). I generally donate to the one who is visibly weary and old or physically challenged. I refuse to pay to those who ask for money showing little kid in their hands while they are themselves able enough to earn money by working. Real needy may look at you with hope while the "fake" ones will nag you... This is based on my observation but you may use your conscience so you dont do injustice to a real poor.

NO BUT THEY ARE BEGGING BECAUSE THE DIDN'T`T STUDY AND DID HARD WORK NOR THEY ARE TRYING NOW AND LOOKING FOR EASY I ONLY GIVE MONEY TO OLD AGED BEGGARS AS THEY ARE THE ONES WHO SUFFER BECAUSE CHILDREN HAVE THROWN THEM OWN OF THEIR HOUSE.

Certainly as the old saying goes, give the man a fish he will be happy for the moment, teach him fishing he will be content all his life.

if they are irritating you, it's bad. if they were nice to you, it's ok to give money..........

Nope I don't think its bad but its your choice & a lot of beggars accumulates once u start giving money, so one needs to be careful. Moreover its better to give money directly to the beggars instead of donating to the charities because in India most of the politicians steel away that money.

barsha
i think, if anybody suffer in any problems so we can help him or her to give some money.
and if it is a business then why we feel sad or bad.
and if any poor man sold something then we buy this product to help him or her

give money to beggers is human piece in our India.week-person is only begging, one line i say Donner persons hand should be above, and beggar persons hand is below.so you must love to charity.Rahiman ve nar mar chuke, jin mukh sangat nahi, unke pehle ve mue, balance every one know.

well it actually makes them always dependent..and they never strive to work hard. They make begging a proffession..i think inorder to make them individuals, hardworking, sensible persons..we should nt encourage giving...and get them proper education..

alwayz help beggarz
u too doin good job

we should judje whether to give him or not by his physical ability.
if he is still young and energetic don't give bcoz he has lots of time in his life and can earn his own bread by working hard.
if he is poor and fragile help him ti tke to ashramas........
let him be cared there

well, I think giving them money only encourage them to beg,in India there is lot of people who r professionally beggars, they don't like to find a job & most of them r drug users. So I thing it is always better in India to avoid giving money to beggers to discourage them.If one really wants to help India's poor people then plz. donate to any NGO or these shorts of org. it will be very much usefull.Of course there r lot of aged poor people one will find in India who have nothing & can't find a job either. one can help them directly. So it's not a matter of good or bad, one should be use commonsense.

beggaring in most countries are a profession. it's always easier to beg than work. and ur not even sure where they use the money for - even if you give to 7-year old kids, i've seen them use the money for rugby and gambling. give food instead if u want to help.
Bottom line: BEGGARS NEVER MAKE ANYTHING OF THEMSELVES OR THEIR LIFE. there are so many cinderella poor to rich stories out there, but none of them started as beggars. think about that!

Begging:

- a profession, and a consciously taken decision for some

where as for some unfortunate souls,

- it is the only way of surviving.

You may give money for physically disabled people (blind, deaf and dumb, can't walk etc., etc.,).

I'm not sure whether you understand the south Indian language 'Tamil' in which there is a saying, 'Paththiram Arindhu pichaiyidu' meaning, know to whom you are giving money or for that matter whatever you give.

It is not completely bad or a sinful thing to do, while one has to know to whom he / she is giving the money.
