Hello,
I have travelled through India, from a womens personal experience (and I am not Indian) and certainly dont look Indian. I never felt safe unless I was with my husband or his family...I was constantly stared at, followed by men and in crowded places (markets) gropped by lude men. The feeling subsided as I grew used to my surroundings, and you certainly became more aware of places NOT to be. The fact that I had never been before certainly added to the feeling of being wary. I did feel safe however, on one occassion that was living in a village, not far from Krukshetra.
My husband is certainly an NRI ... and in my country he was always a bit overly cautious, but when we reached India it was like he was a DIFFERENT PERSON! he was deffinately home, so to speak. He was certainly never scared, of anything ... to him India is home and it certainly showed and I envied the ease and simple freedom he took in everything. He was a bit wary of me at times though crossing the street or when I was driving (driving in India is something you have too see to believe)
I guess you need to ask yourself a few things are you a native of India, born there? lived there? as it certainly is easier if you are more familliar with it. My husband was always fearful of kidnappings as this is a real threat, I would say never go out alone at night in big cities, be aware of the areas that are not safe (all cities have such dodgey areas) and a male presence or even 2 certainly helps. Always play it safe. |

Bangalore is quite safe as far as I know! Delhi is very harsh especially for new people. Mumbai is just OK..I l..Remember the more you provoke the more you get..Isn't that same in USA..my 3 cousins who are there in 3 cities had bad experiences..No city is absolutely safe. |

India's very safe, as long as you don't go looking for trouble.
If you're going to be travelling alone, risks will be much higher, so you should not hit any secluded travel destinations and always travel in a tour group or something.
Also, what places do you plan to go to exactly? Because different cities have different danger levels. Mumbai is actually a very safe city, contrary to what most outsiders think, while Delhi is very dangerous for women travelling alone at night.
And you look pretty Indian to me, so I doubt you'll have a problem. |

ohh of course, they only show the scary stuff on the news, india's actually really safe! i was an nri and visited every year! a word of advice, though: don't dress to call too much attention to yourself (unless you're going for a private party or sth). and if you're not very comfortable with the local language of whichever place you're visiting, it's better to have a friend who does with you. and about not looking indian, now there are a lot more foreigners in the country than before, so i doubt that would be of any problem for you! hope you have a good trip :) |

India is so crazy safe. I traveled all over India from North to South (Kashmir to Kerala) and East to West (Sikkim/West Bengal to Rajasthan), no safety problem at all. I even took common transportation (local train and bus) there, even with full of people packed inside, nobody is trying to steal from me.
The only problem in India is pollution, and all those people who falsely guide tourists for money. Stay at least a good 2, 3 weeks minimum to get used to the pollution (noise and garbage) to start appreciate India.
Beside, English is working in India (except Eastern side, including Calcutta). It is even more common in Southern Stats and tourist area (Goa). |
