I am glad you brought Precautions point. If you do want to live alone in India, you should definitely avoid Night Life.

If you are an outdoor person, go walk in the park that requires membership fee, because bad boys are no way around there.

To be honest with you. You should not be hanging so much around with guys. Because for most boys, all girls are like one night stand. I know it is NOT the case for you. But the guys are like that you know.

So, just keep your safety in Mind. For place to live, you should look for some resident that is surrounded by good neighbourhood.

If it's for a holiday, don't stay in anything less than a 3 star hotel, avoid serviced apartments cos these are suites and there may be men in the other rooms. At hotels, get a room close to the lift so you don't have to walk down long corridors. If it's to live, choose an apartment with good security and in a good residential area, preferably a building with families - kids and old people.

If you drink, be careful of friendly men who offer to drive you home or buy you drinks.

If you are a foreigner, be extra careful esp when you go out at night, as there are men who think that white women are always game for sex. Also thanks to our stupid film industry, there are men who think that when a woman says "No" she really means yes. Watch your physical boundaries - things like hugs, pats on the backs etc can be easily misinterpreted.

Try not to travel by auto rickshaw after 9 or 10 pm esp if you're alone. If you use radio taxis, always make sure you get the mobile number of the driver. Save it on your phone and give him a missed call in his presence to confirm that the number he's given you is correct. You can also ask the taxi company in advance for his number, car number and name. Or you can sms it t to someone if you're really paranoid.

Don't go for walks alone at night, and never into parks at night.

Try to have a mobile phone, it helps to feel more secure. You can get prepaid cards from the phone companies.

Take sensible precautions and you should be fine. Bangalore is relatively safe and there are plenty of single women living here. If you're not here for a holiday but to live and work here, try to join some women's networks so you can meet other women and get more feedback from them. If you're an NRI or foreigner you can join the Overseas Womens club.

Of course a single women can, provided she is bold.

Better don't mingle with strangers/travellers. Avoid using ornaments/costly things. Always keep a mobile phone which can be used to contact in urgency. Let the family/friend know your proceesings.....

I have come across many girls in my place of work who stay alone. Most of the things depend on how you behave, how you dress up, how you talk and at which time of the day you have to commute. Make sure you stay in some good area like jayanagar, indiranagar etc. I know they are pretty costly. But don;t save money at the cost of your safety. When you talk to auto drivers or any man for that matter make use of the word "anna" which means brother in kannada.

Its safe enough to travel and stay in Bangalore. I would recommend that you do not venture out alone at night. Ensure that you are in a group of friends if you going clubbing or need to travel by public transports at night.

Check out Laika boutique stay resort just off MG road if you are in Bangalore. Its an interesting art deco concept that most people like. Pictures available at www.anantara.in/laikaphoto.htm
