You don't need a visa to transit, and remember if you are in transit you are not allowed to leave the airport. If you want to stay any longer than your transit a visa MUST be obtained BEFORE you get to India

you don't need transit visa if you are not going to leave the airport, while waiting for the flight connection.
if you apply for transit visa you can stay in the country for 15 days. but it's quite expensive.
