Swapan, The Dream
Apparently its built by Muslim rulers with the help of architects from Iran and Persia. However there is some debate. According to some scholar it was actually a Hindu Temple of Lord Shiva named TEJO MAHALAYA.

Please read details in the following sites -
http://www.hindunet.org/hindu_history/modern/taj_oak.html
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tejo_Mahalaya
http://www.flex.com/~jai/satyamevajayate/tejo.html

Personally I also believe it was not completely built by Shahjahan. May be he and his architects modified it to make it look similar to Muslim style.

danial_xo66

The Taj Mahal is is NO way an islamic Building.

Graves of whomsoever are NOT considered to be of any importance in Islam. There are some IGNORANT Muslims who have taken the Graveyards as Places of worship.

Shah Jahan made the Taj Mahal as a Tomb for his beloved wife.

In reality, the Islamic perspective calls for the Grave to be as simple as possible. The Dead are clothed in one plain white shroud and buried in the grave. There are Prophetic traditions that asks Muslims to refrain from beautifying the Grave.

What is the NEED for beautifying the Grave? The person who died can NOT feel whether his grave has flowers on it or not. What he exactly needs is Good Deeds. What he needs is Prayers of mercy for him.

And NOT just an artwork with NO prayers.

The Taj Mahal (sometimes called "the Taj") is generally considered the finest example of Mughal architecture, a style that combines elements of Persian, Turkish, Indian, and Islamic architectural styles. While the white domed marble mausoleum is the most familiar part of the monument, the Taj Mahal is actually an integrated complex of structures. It was listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1983 when it was described as a "universally admired masterpiece of the world's heritage."

your question itself is incorrect as Taj Mahal is not a Building but it is a Great monument. Secondly its a world heritage. Thirdly its a symbol of great love and its pride for india that such monument is in India. Its neither an Islamic or Hindu Building. It was buily by a ruler who was professing islam but that doesn't mean that it became islamic building. its a great piece of art made up of marble and for centuries to come mankind with collective efforts cann't even construct its replica.

The Taj Mahal was built by the Emperor Shah Jahan as a tomb for his wife (he was also buried in it later). He was a Muslim (in name at least).
It resembles a mosque and has verses from the Quran on the sides but at the end of the day, it is still a site of a grave and graves are supposed to be simple structures (in Islam). So is it Islamic? I would think not.
But it is definitely not Hindu.
