Having gone through the previous answers, I think that most of these comments also apply to Pakistan and other South Asian countries. Maybe, there is nothing uniquely Indian. I am Pakistani.

the only place in the world , where black money is several times the white money circulated . And politicians can kill anyone ,instigate riots like raj thakeray did , without fear of the law.
plus points - in the villages they would feed a stranger as their own guest. among the most intelligent species among humans though devious . and yes the forward castes thrive inspite of every effort of the govt to deny them higher education and jobs - by contributing their skills to develop foriegn nations.

I just finished reading the book "Turtle Feet" which was excellent - and one of the main themes of the book was the statement "only in India!"

It could be summed up like this;

In India sometimes things happen
and sometimes they don't
and either way it is OK.

I am not from India. I have never been there - it sounds like an amazing place, almost as if it were a stage where the great and mysterious paradoxes of life are acted out for all to see!
