Lets see....weatherwise Sept should be quite hot and humid except in Rishikesh(which is at a higher altitude) and don't be surprised if it rains continously because that time is monsoon season. Mumbai usually gets flooded during that time, so be prepared for that.

I would advise you to stay away from the food at the pilgrim centers as they could be contaminated. Also, get a lot of mosquito repellant, vaccinations etc before you come and be prepared for dust, pollution and stench.

Stick with other tourists and do not venture out alone esp. at night. Get a guide, if you can, to show you around. They could be hired at some travel agencies.

All in all, you should find India Interesting, amazing or even amusing sometimes. All the best for your trip.

Bonjour Patrick !! Comment allez vous ?

Well, i am an Indian working in Paris. I belong to Kerala in India. It is a nice thing that you want to visit Amma. September is a good month as by that time rainy season would have come to en end in Kerala. There are certain things that you should bear in mind in whichever state you are. They are--
1) Always make a hotel booking before you travel. Otherwise you could be cheated. By booking earlier, you always know how much you need to spend.
2) Make a travel iteniary-- that is which place you would start with and followed by other destinations. You should also plan as to how many days you will spend at a particular destination. This will help you to chart out your travel plans.
3) While travelling by train or bus, always be careful about your purse or wallet.
4) Temperature is mostly hot, so use a sunscreento protect yourself.
5) Always eat from a good hotel, otherwise you could end up having food-poisoning problem.
6) If anybody while travelling offers you some thing to eat, say "NO" without offending them. You could be drugged and robbed.
7) Always carry medicines for symptoms like cold, headaches and other minor ailments. Because medicines out there might not suit you.
8) Keep a lot of money in denomination of Rupees 10. This will help you to pay for taxi, auto ,bus or even for giving as a tip.
9) Never go out alone at night. You could be robbed. Always go out as group.
10) you might face problem with mosquitoes. So, take mosquito-repellants or some cream with you.
11) Always bargain before buying anything. If you bargain, shopkeepers will not take you for a ride.
12)You may use the websites mentioned in the other answers to help you as to where to stay and dine.

Welcome to India. It is an Incredible country. With a little bit of caution and street smartness, i am sure you will be able to enjoy the travel and places and also imbibe the various cultures the beautiful country has to offer.
Bon vacance!!!
