North or South for first trip to India? |
Hi, I am going to India with friend in January, and she is doing 2 tours. One covers the North including Delhi, Varanasa etc. and the other tour covers the south - Chennai, Kerala and Goa. Unfortunately, I can only do one of the tours - which one should I do!! thanks |

Don't get confusion. The situation is not normal in north india now. so, don't ask anyone to choose. it is best south india, more peaceful and best. ok? |

For the first time visitor, India has enormous things to offer in any corner. It will be largely dependant on your choice as to where to go. I can tell some general tips to help you to make decision. Either way it will be fun, so rst assured.
1. North will be quite cold in this season.
2. General election in Uttar Pradesh may hamper your visit.
3. north has hills and natural beauty. Religious tourism will be better in north.
4. South has good beaches in goa, chennai, pondy, kanya kumari etc..
5. Food will be a problem in south india. they serve food cooked in coconut oil. If not conversant, you will feel like vomiting.
6. If going to south, don't miss pongal in chennai on 14th Jan.
GOOD LUCK |

in january north india will be cold while south will be pleasant. both have enough to offer and it is a choice you gotta make depending on what is there on offer and what u want to see. if u want beaches, south is the place. taj at agra is in the north, other monuments are more in the north than in the south.
enjoy ur hol

I would do the southern tour. Starting with the climate, the north is cold around January while the south is just perfect. Then the south usually is cleaner and has the more attractive vegetation while the north could scare you off if its your first trip to India. It is rich in heritage plus the beaches present a welcome getaway if traveling became too much for you. You got to try some aryuvedic massages, which is really the domain of the south. Don't miss to spend a day or two on the backwaters around Alleppey. I would skip Chennai (I don't like that place, its just grey and dirty) and see Madurai or Mysore instead, maybe Bangalore. Food should not be much of a problem in the south, you could always find places which serve northern dishes if you find the southern stuff too spicy. My world favorite restaurant is a veg place called Ariya Nivaas in Trivandrum, the best veg food you would ever find anywhere. |

well, i would suggest you plan your trip separately and visit places in both north and south. Since it is your first trip I would suggest visiting Delhi, Agra, Mumbai, Goa and Kerala.
If you still have to choose between north or south, i would say "south" :) I didn't like Chennai much but Goa and Kerala are amazing! |

Tough choice! I would recommend the north. ONLY reason being that you'll be able to see the Taj Mahal, the ghats at Varanasi, the Red Fort, etc, etc. If you're happy to miss those things though the south is just amazing. |

Hi...I feel the north and south of India are charming in their own way in terms of architecture, language and culture. North India is famous for its pilgrimages( varanasi, Vaishno Devi etc,.) historical monuments(Taj Mahal, Agra Fort, Red Fort) etc,. South is more famous for its beaches as in Goa and Kerala. However, most foreign tourists usually take the 'Golden Triangle' route which covers the Agra, Jaipur and Delhi. It gives a glimpse of India's mughal and colonial architecture and the huge palaces that used to be home to many rulers. |

it's a tough one. the north has some classic things, the taj mahal, the temples of varanasi, but the south is so beautiful and lush and in some ways it's more pure because there have been less invasions down there. either way it'll be great.
i guess i'll lean towards the south because of the time of year. |
