You can see the entire country. No problem...yes, you will encounter strange situations and behavior along the way, but...
Any advice would be... dress appropriately!..You will feel more comfortable, for starters..and less attention. just keep yourself covered...it shouldn't be hard...India has plenty of beautiful flowy clothes to be bought when you arrive...dirt cheap. it is a strange balance you find within yourself there..not keeping yourself too guarded, attaining an unimagined sense of patience and realizing that no matter what your planning ... new adventures are waiting to happen.

You can go to any tourist place of your choice provided you can take care of yourself. Some safety tips:
Do not wear short clothes.
Do not travel alone in public transport in the night.
Socializing in India is not understood properly. A woman socializing is considered as out going. So don't socialize with strange guys.
If you want a drink go only to a bar / pub in a five star hotel.

I am an Indian living in America. I feel I should apologize for my people and their douchiness that you will most likely encounter on your trip there.

Be prepared to get stared at a lot, we might even point. Other than Bangalore there are not that many white people around the rest of India.
Stay only at 5 star hotels. The best thing I would recommend is to make Indian friends back home (if you dont have any) and then travel with them. I was born there and have gone back to travel with non Indian friends who I can take around town without them having any worries. They prefer to stay with my relatives since the food is wayy better and you cant beat indian hospitality.

there are a lot of wonderful places in India and the country is not so bad as described.. as in all places, nobody will trouble you if you mind your own business and thats normal in any country..

there are a lot of chances of being cheated coz of obvious greed for money which is quite common everywhere.. so i would suggest you to have a local contact person who can guide you around..

Oh....please be careful. I've gone out and about a little bit by myself there, but it's really best if you can be with someone else. yeah, dress modestly and be especially careful at night. watch the movie "taken" before you go too.

I want to say that so many ladies come alon from far east countries they travel in India and go back to their country without any problem, they have high self confidante in them. You can also go any where in India. You have to take some important steps during journey like stay in hotels or inn which are govt under taking & reputed where good rush stays,don't go in taxi alon.
