Okay this is a loose itenerary since i dont know how long you will be staying. I would start with Delhi and work my way down to Goa. You will not be able to see the entire country or expereince its vast differences in culture, climate, food etc because time is a limit (even for me who has visited all four corners and still have not had enough time to see it all).

Delhi - You can get a taste of India by beginning here. The modern juxtaposes with the old. Some monument to see are Red Fort, Kuthub Minar and the memorial of Gandhi. Visit places like Chandni Chowk and Paratha Gali (gali means lane/street). Some of these merchants have been in business since the time of the moguls. While there make sure you eat a paratha.

Agra (a few hrs away from Delhi)-- You MUST see the Taj Mahal. It is a beatiful piece of history and a memorial of love. Stroll in the garden and take pictures (sunset pictures are gorgeous).

Jaipur/Udaipur -- Rajastan is a colorful state with some very old but beautiful palaces. The pink palace in Jaipur and the different palaces in udaipur are wonderul (especially the palace in the middle of Lake Pichola in Udaipur --- it is now a hotel).

Bombay -- A modern city with some old world charm. Make sure you visit Gate of India, Haji Ali (shrine of Muslim holy man but it is visited by people of all faiths.)

Goa -- After visiting and sightseeing you need a little R & R. Go to Goa and enjoy the beaches. Make sure you also drink some fenny (cashew liquor) and eat the cashews of Goa (they are like no other cashew in the world)

If you have time I would also recommend places like Ajanta Elora (near Bombay), Kanyakumari (tip of India where you can see the sunrise and sunset -- absolutely to die for views).

Visit Golden Triangle means Delhi - Jaipur- Agra, if you have enough time you can go for wild life tour to jim corbett national park & Rajaji National park

If you love adventure go for Rafting at Rishikesh ,stay in ganga beach camps located right on river Ganga, even you can go for trekking .

Go Kerala if you have 6-7 days time , go Goa if you have 3-4 days time

The north will be a little chilly in December, especially at night.

Kerala and rural Tamil Nadu are some of my favorite places. In rural Tamil Nadu, taking a bus at night from one provincial town to another let's you see the 1,000 year old gopurams (temple towers) that will be taller than anything else in the countryside.

~Taj Mahal- A 7th wonder of the world. Worth every penny to go there
(750 R for tourists, 200 for citizens)
~Fathepur Sikri (Not one of my favorites, but very historical)
~Akbar's Tomb-Sikandra : Tomb of Akbar
~Mysore Palace (Worth It)
~Chennai (Madras) Nice Temples along the way..

~Mathura
~Vrindavan

These two places are the historical places where the god, Krishna, (http://theyumblog.files.wordpress.com/2007/08/krishna.jpg) Grew up.
They are kind of dirty, and there are a lot of beggars, so be warned.

I guess those are the things from the top of my head...
:D
Hope you have alot of fun!
India is my favorite place. I go there almost every year now...its where my parents were brought up

Try to make it to Varanasi if you can. Though all of the other suggestions provided are worthwhile, most are overly touristy. If that's the kind of thing you're going for, by all means head to those places. I'm an American who has lived in various places around India for many years and have been to most of the places mentioned.

Varanasi is the oldest continuously inhabited city on earth - more than 5,000 years of continuous civilization. It is the city that every Hindu yearns to die and be cremated in as Hindus believe that dying in Varanasi (or Kashi) means breaking one's soul from the circle of reincarnation. Right outside of Varanasi is Sarnath, the birthplace of Buddhism. Varanasi also has a very large and vibrant Muslim community. Benaras (another name for Varanasi) is one of those places that touches you all the way to your core, no matter how little time you spend there.

If you want to enjoy the sea and sand visit Goa, Kovalam Beach near Trivandrum, or enjoy houseboat stays in the scenic backwaters of Kerala. If you want to see wild elephants go to Thekkady or Coorg.
See the various packages offered by Yatra in the website referred below.

Well if you have never been to a country like that before get ready for a culture shock. Take some Imodium with you. You are going to need it.
