Touching feet is a gesture of respect in India. The gesture is a mark of respect for the people elder to them. This cultural honour is more prevalent in North India as a social etiquette. It signifies the humbleness of the person and that is done to seek blessings of elders. Feet of both elder men and women are touched and also as a couple also (like uncle and aunt, elder brother or cousin with their respective wives). The ritualistic feet touching is done in the temples or ceremonies when the feet of the priest or the scholars present there being touched. The Pandits or Brahmins recite a small chant called GOTRABHIVADAN which says to what Gotra (lineage) he belongs and his sectoral affiliation (of one of the four Vedas which are the holy scriptures). Thus touching the feet is an act of sublimity and good etiquette socially, culturally and spiritually.

the reason why we Indians touch the feet of our elders, teachers or any one we respect is a symbolic way of showin we salute the value they are rooted in a paticular set of values. Take the example of a teacher or a saint, we see that he or she is firmly rooted in a paticular value, n the feet show "being firmly rooted ". This is why we touch people's feet, n no there is no such thing taht you need to do it only after a shower...its jus reverence.....n u don need to shower to show u have reverence to someone!!

Touching feet to the elders is respect to them, irrespective of men or women. It has scientific value as well. All parts of our body can be sensualised from our feet. People who are in accupressure field, knows it well. More over, our feet got different values. They are in direct contact with the earth. They make our life to stand and so we give respect to the feet. Its not just symboloc respect but scientific values are too added in this tradition.

THIS tradition has come into existence since muslims came to India or from muslim families.
Further, muslims follow this tradition since the time Prophet muhammed lived.
People used to kiss prophet muhammed`s holy feet as a sign of respect.
similarly today people touch elders` feet as a sign of respect.

As per my knowledge its a kind of thing where we are showing them that we dont have proud, our heads are before u, U are the one whom we trust, respect and seek advice
