Rekha is a South Indian. She was born in 1954 in Chennai. She is the daughter of renowned Tamil Actor Gemini Ganesan and Telugu Actress Pushpavalli. Her father hailed from an orthodex Samartha Brahmin family belonging to the Mulukanadu sub-caste, but chose to take up acting profession.

She is the daughter of Jamini Ganeshan ,a renowned south indian actor ,popularly called Kathal Mannan meaning king of romance.
