It depends upon where you are going. If you disclose the place i may guide you some where.

Lot of Temple cities have place to stay for couple of days . On the request they may extend it couple of weeks.

Hindu Temples and Maths also do this. In Mysore or other cities where earlier Maharajs established such tradition or still running as a Charity for poor students.

Some of Masjids provide the rooms for the Poor Students of the Muslim Community.

Churches also do this.

You can sometimes stay at dharmashalas but the accommodation will usually be VERY basic and not very safe. Only very poor or desperate people will usually stay there.

If you've been raised in a developed part of the world (Western Europe, USA, Canada, Japan, etc) or even "upper middle" income country (Malaysia, Mexico, Brazil, Poland) and think that you can handle "very basic" in a country like India that is "upper lower" (in the UN's terms) you will be surprised. Almost certainly you will NOT want to stay in any such basic accommodation.

While traveling, if you are a friendly person who is interested in India and respectful of people's cultures, you might be asked to stay in someone's home for a few days, but you can't count on this. VERY few foreigners are so open to the country that they are willing to do this.

nothing is free anywhere. there s no reason why any one should allow you to stay free of rent. if you work in an establishment, you may be given rent free accommodation as a perquisite. you may be allowed to stay two or three days free in a dharma shala but the manager may need some tips. you may also stay free in railway waiting room for some time if you have valid journey ticket.
