The Tonga entered Indian culture in mid 18th century through the traders of East India Company. Built initially for their own luxury, it later became part of the common man’s life. It is still used for joy rides in many Indian cities.

It is a two wheeler horse driven vehicle used to carry passengers as well as goods. The body of tanga meant to carry passengers is different from the body of goods carrying Tanga or Tonga. The body is mainly made of wood with one pair of cushioned seats, back to back, for passengers. On an average six normal adults can sit in a tanga, besides its driver. The passenger tanga has a collapsible hood to cover the heads of passengers, in case of sunshine or light rains.

The wheels of a typical tanga are also made of wood with hard rubber lining at the radius of the wheels. Tanga is still used in many areas of India for ferrying passengers and goods.
