Should I go?

I have the opportunity to do an internship in Bangalore, India, but I'm getting cold feet about going to a country so alien to my own.

I highly recommend you go. Seriously. I was handed the opportunity to be there for over three months and it was the best decision I ever made. It was an amazing experience. India is a fascinating place.
I envy your opportunity. Do you want me to go in your place????? haha.

Honestly, though...
It is a huge decision and I completely understand being wary of it. I don't think you would regret going there, though. I had an amazing time. The group that I worked with were so much fun to be around and were so eager to learn what I had to teach them.
I cannot put into words how much I fell in love with Bangalore.
Don't listen to anyone that has never been there, because there is no way they could possibly know what it's like. You really just have to see for yourself. There are a lot of misconceptions.

I'm not saying it's all candy and easter bunnies, you see bad things no matter where you go... but if I had the opportunity to live there, I would take it in a heartbeat.

Feel free to read my blog from when I was there.

It has a lot of personal stuff about friends I made while I was there, but there are some things that might help you feel a little better about making your decision.

Good luck.

Yes, Yes and thrice yes. I've spent a total of maybe a year or so traveling around India and while Bangalore wasn't the highlight of my trip I'd personally love the opportunity to do an internship there. Why? Because I've since lived and worked in other Asian countries and found that living in a county really does give you a much deeper insight into the people and the culture than just passing through. Even if you hate your time there (which you surely won't if you have an adventurous bone in your body) it'll be an experience you'll never forget and a chance to understand a bit about a culture which is very removed from your own.
Incidentally, although I'm sure that if this is your first visit to India you will certainly suffer some degree of culture shock, Bangalore itself is one of the more cosmopolitan cities in Indiand this should make your transition in lifestyle a little smoother. The city has several western style bars and restaurants and generally the people of Bangalore seem more cosmopolitan than in other cities. It seemed to me a very westernized city (compared to the rest of the country). I just passed through a few times though. You'll be living there and will be able to speak with a lot more authority than I.

Welcome

India is a diversified cultured country where you will find all type of people right from western oriented Mumabai youth to "Half - nakked" tribles.

I dont understand for what reason you are coming to India? Normally two reason are behind migration towards India. One is Spritualism other is Life Standard and cost of living in Indian Cities.

if you coming for first reason I feel you dont need to take any precaution as you will be combined in any spritual forces which spread all over country. But the spiritual capital of India is Rishikesh which on the base of Mighty Himalayas around 300 Kms NE of New Delhi where all Saints, Rishis are runnig their schools etc.

If you coming to Indian Cities take as much as precautions. If you are lady still it is worst.
1. Dont rome alone
2. Register you arrival with the local police
3. As far as possible stay in staff quarters of your employer
4. If you staying out, stay only in the city limits and not in city out skirts
5. Learn the regional language (hindi will not work at most of the places)
6. Best places to stay Mumbai - Vast city, Cost of living is second highest in the world
New Delhi - National Capital most of the industries located in the satilite towns around ND
Bangalore - Ideal location - highest altitude among all major cities of India it is 1000 Ft above the MSL - Out skirts are not safe for ladies as well techies
Chennai - Language is the main problem - Apart from you work place no where English or Hindi is used. Tamil - regional Language is must. - Water scarcity is very high - 98% is ave Relative Humidity

I feel that you should go and experience it. Each country is different and variety is the spice of life... Go ahead and enjoy.. there is always a route back if you do not like it there.
