X-MODEL

Some months back I asked many questions about travelling to N.India....?

I would like to thank all the answerers and would like to inform that my plans to visit India is finally happening from the 19th Dec.

Now I need some help... any recommendations for souvenir/gift shopping and shopping in general. I'm very keen in getting handicraft items. I would be in Delhi, Jaipur and Agra and Sawai Madhopur.

What is the weather like now?

Thanks for any and all help.

For souvenir/gift shopping from all over India, I would definetly recommend going to Delhi haat once. it is located near INA market. It has stalls from all over India, so you can get different kinds of stuff, and good quality stuff, and the prices are reasonable for most stuff. It maybe cheaper to get some of that stuff in jaipur and Sawai madhopur directly, so no need to buy Rajasthani stuff there. it would be more than a gift shopping experience, I am sure. The idea to take a local there would be best. if required, you can ask me further questions via email.

The weather here is pretty cold, depends on where you come from I guess. its running 6-18 deg C, min - max in a day, so i suggest you get your woollens out as well.

I don't know

In Delhi the tem. today( 12 Dec.) is 5 degrees C. In Other places it will be like that. But pl. remember the winter in India is much more severe than in USA or Europe becuase every place is not centrally heated. So sometimes the visitors feel more cold here than in USA even though the temp. there is minus 20 deg. cel. So be prepared for that.
The gift shops are every where. You are advised to go to Government Emporia rather than private shops. You will not be cheated at least. And do tell you cab man that you want to go to Govt. emporia only. Welcome to India....

Shopping - Govt. owned shops are good for foreigners. You are going to Rajasthan & U.P. States, so Rajasthan State Emporium and U.P. State Emporium will be good for handicrafts & Saaries.
If you like something on streets than bargaining is must. You have to offer the 1/10th of the price of shopkeeper.Avoid the shops near historical places, they are engaged to loot the travellers.

Weather - Perfect. No rain, No heat, just slight cold

The Prince
Bargain Bargain Bargain.

I cannot emphasize that enough. Even if you bargain and you think that you are getting a good deal...trust me, you are getting ripped off.

I would highly recommend shopping with a local. I don't know if you know someone local or not who would be willing to go out shopping with you.

By USA standard it will be good weather. May have some rain in few places but no down pour.

Delhi, Jaipur and Agra are good place for Hand crafted items.

Sawai Madhopur I have no idea.

The key is to bargain. There may not be any fix prices.

A good place to buy gifts is any govt-run cottage industry shop or clothes emporium. As for the weather, check BBC world weather site - very informative.

I am SOOO jealous. I think you are picking the right time of year to go. Might be slightly chilly but not to bad. My family usually goes in February.
I would stay away from cheesy souvenirs. Get a beautiful saree. Get a deity statue...bronze or marble maybe..I think they make them out of sandstone too. Get things that are real to the culture, not the crap they sell to every tourist
