(i)Philosophy
India is the cradle of several religions of the world. Mention may be made of Hinduism -- the oldest philosophy (not a religion) on life; Buddhism, Jainism, Sikhism and hundreds of beliefs of the millions of people that dwell in this fantastic area called India.

This cosmopolitan nature has made the Indians generally more humble, and tolerant towards fellow human beings.

India is one place on earth where you can have a feel of all the climatic regions on earth. India has deserts, tundra-type of regions, barren lands, monsoon washed plains, rivers -- perennial as in those in north and NE India and also the seasonal ones as in those in South India; coasts (over 7000 kilometres), natural hot springs, gurgling streams and tropical as well as deciduous forests.

India is a cultural cauldron as well. Besides the rich cultures, heritages and folklores, there are traditions that are well preserved by the Indians.

India still has its roots in tradition. For instance, family is still considered sacrosanct. In fact, India is the model for many western societies for sustenance, morally, ethically and spiritually.

India is successfully juggling isms, western (Occidental) materialism and eastern (Oriental) wisdom!

India is an emerging tiger in the global economy. In fact, as per the purchasing power, India is the fourth largest economy in the world; at the same time according to the exchange rates she is the world's12th largest economy
and the fourth largest in purchasing power.

India is the most populous liberal democracy in the world.
India is geographically the seventh-largest country in the world (3,287,263 square kilometres).

India is the the second most populous country on earth after China. Steps are on to optimally cut down the mushrooming growth of population through democratic means so that the people themselves come forward to accept the family planning strategies.

When many cultures in the world were only nomadic forest dwellers over 5000 years ago, Indians established Harappan culture in Sindhu Valley ( Indus Valley India in 100 BC.

The name `Indiaâ€™ is derived from the River Indus, the valleys around which were the home of the early settlers. The Aryan worshippers referred to the river Indus as the Sindhu.

The Persian invaders converted it into Hindu. The name `Hindustanâ€™ combines Sindhu and Hindu and thus refers to the land of the Hindus.

The number system was invented by India. Aryabhatta was the scientist who invented the digit zero.

The game of snakes & ladders was created by the 13th century poet saint Gyandev. It was originally called 'Mokshapat.' The ladders in the game represented virtues and the snakes indicated vices. The game was played with cowrie shells and dices. Later through time, the game underwent several modifications but the meaning is the same i.e good deeds take us to heaven and evil to a cycle of re-births.

The Baily Bridge is the highest bridge in the world. It is located in the Ladakh valley between the Dras and Suru rivers in the Himalayan mountains. It was built by the Indian Army in August 1982.
