If your referring to the occupation which occupies the largest percentage of the population of Indian, then your answer is farming. I have no information regarding whether the type of farming is subsistence/commercial, arable/pastoral.

I agree with indi32, indians are so self-content in their ancient culture, that most of them dont feel any need to work hard to make the country modern. Also, they dont tolerate criticism as well!
