yeah i understand this cuz we indians are very consious about our skin...we don't like to get tan. we like to remain as white as possible, so don't punch her mom....its normal..just like american s and europeans wanna tan, indians like fair skin.

Its part of our culture, to respect the judgment of our elders.
Its definitely not about about fairness.
The parents just want to make sure their girl get a good suitable life partner within their own community if she choose to do so.
You see when Indian families are looking for bride the do a back check on her and then this beach outing may come out in a bad light.
So you don't want your friend to have tough life ahead as she will or might want to get married to a decent home within her community.
I know it may sound a bit crude and not so cool, but that's how different cultures react differently.
