every train has got two kennels, one in the front of the train and one in the rear. These are located in the Guard Compartment. So, you need to book your ticket in the same train and then buy a ticket for dog on the day of departure. remember, the occupancy allocated for the dog is one a first come first serve basis. So, make sure you be there as early as possible before the departure of the train. That way you can make sure that you get the preferred dog carriage.

Also, once you have put your dog in the dog carriage, you need to visit the dog once or twice during the journey and feed it etc..

Besides the answers that others have provided, I have a few additions. If travelling by train, you could book a self-contained unit (such as a coupe in First Class, or all four berths in a 2nd AC compartment) and get permission from the guard / station master at the departure station to take the dog with you in your compartment. That way, you can console your dog who will no doubt find the journey a little traumatic, and also be able to take him/her for quick walks at stops.

If you have the luxury of time, a car and a dog accustomed to travelling in it, try a road trip. We have been travelling a lot with our four dogs, including a 15-day road trip from Delhi to Goa and back last year, and then when we shifted to Goa as well. Just make sure you plan your itinerary carefully and book ahead, as you'll have to find places which will let you stay with your dog (isn't all that difficult).

You haven't specified the age of the dog. if its a pup, then flight is the best option, though they are frightfully expensive. But then if you love your dog a lot, am sure it wouldn't be much of a bother. Flights are fast and the dog has to be alone only for a lil while. But a problem with flights is that only Jet and Indian Airlines accept live animals as cargo. I had to transport my 6 month old Boxer from Mangalore to Patna. It cost me around 9000 bucks , but in the end, the dog reached my home safe and sound (a little fidgety ofcourse).
If its a big dog, (more than a year old) then trains are ok. THough you have to constantly keep going to the guard compartment and have a check. The dog has to be supplied with plenty of fresh water and food, and remember the dog will get panicky , alone in the indian railways scary rides. You know the railways right????? he he...
There is another option where the dog can travel with you in your compartment. If the train you are traveling in, has Ac First bogies, then it can travel with you. but you need to buy a ticket for it and the fellow passengers MUST NOT object ( the possibility of that happening is one in a million!!) Remember that you have to take of the cleanliness of the compartment too.
I'd suggest you take the flight, a direct jet Airways from Delhi to Hyderabad. The dog will be booked as excess luggage and will be away from you only during the flight. You also have to provide for the cage, complying to the airlines norms (Must be closed from three sides, with ample space for the dog to sit up, sleep, and move. Properly ventilated). you need to go to a Vet to get your dog's travel certificate made and the dog , preferably , must be sedated/drowsy [can be induced by giving him the required medicine as per his body weight... consult Vet].
Train journeys are agonizingly scary for the animals and remember, NEVER EVER SEND YOUR DOG THROUGH THOSE MOVERS AND PACKERS PEOPLE....]
Cheers..

By AIR will be ideal and fast but if it's costly then by Train is Preferable but first of all I would like to know the breed of the dog. Because if he's huge then it's better to transport him by AIR as huge breeds get tired easily.
