Traveling to India...? |
I am an American woman and in a few weeks I am going to India to meet my fiance and his family. I will be there for a little over a week. What are we allowed to do in public? Can we touch at all? What is accepted and how do I keep from offending anyone? What clothes should I wear? What kind of environment should I expect? What kind of reaction from strangers will I get? Do you have any tips? I have never been outside the US before. And I am extremely nervous. My fiance also says that couples there are supposed to match each other physically. I am a bit overweight and he is slim. How is that going to affect us there? Thanks. Additional Details I am going to Bhubaneswar for 2-3 days, then we are going to his parents' in Rahama. |

Dont you worry maam. India is a cool country. People may look at you with lewd eyes but you should not bother.
1) You can do everything in public like holding hands and hugging but I would advise you not to kiss him in public. Yes you can walk touching his body,,
2) Wear any type of clothes, no problem at all. I hope that you will not wear a bikini in public. LOL.
3) Weather is going to be moderate in Oct and Nov. Dec to Feb are colder months. It also depends which place you are going there. South India is always hot and humid.
4) I feel your fiancee is a bit nervous too when he tells that couples are supposed to match each other physically in India. Dont you think that couples are supposed to match physicaly every where in the world??
Please ask me more. |

I guess you are going to Rahama,Paradeep .If yes, that's a small village in Orissa.
People must haven't seen any foreigners over there, so expect a lot of people staring at you.
The people in India( particularly the countrymen) are quite conservative, so better showing off the affection and love in public.Don't kiss and hug in that village, people might not find it a comfortable scene.
Wear some jeans-tee or "chudidaar" if you've got. Do not wear any thing revealing.
O yeah, expect some huge cultural shock. |

My husband is Indian and I am not. I have been to India a couple of times and have had no problems at all! You really should stop worrying. The people are one of the friendliest you will ever meet! Everyone will want to invite you to their house for tea!
My husband is from a small village in the north. No problems at all. I am sure your fiance will help you also, why not ask him. |

Hi I was in India this year for the first time and definitely felt more comfortable when I wore high neck, long sleeved tops (light cotton) and long skirts. Sometimes I would wear a vest top - but would cover my shoulders and chest with a shawl, it certainly stopped lewd looks! |

It is very nice to see his family and the family place in India. You have not mentioned in which city you are going. If the place is a big city then it does not make much difference as people from big cities have seen foreign people. But if you are going to a small place then people are very much curious about foreign people. And due to this curiosity you may feel somewhat different in their company. They will try to watch you closely. This will happen for first one or two days and then you will get accustomed to it.
In India, kissing in public is not desirable. You can touch but no hugging with your fiance, but hugging to your mother in law will be highly appreciated.
Donot get nervous, Indian people are very loving and you will receive a warm welcome. You will feel like meeting these people very often. One of my relatives has American wife and the family is doing extremely well. American daughter in law is very loving.
Do visit India! It is a wonderfull country and come again and again to meet all of us. |

Just be normal. American standard of dressing may not be helpful in Bhubaneswar. In the village you better dress in a saree. You can hold hands in Bhubaneswar but not in the village. In Mumbai, Kolkatta and Delhi, you can wear the dress of your liking. When you meet your future in-law, you are supposed to touch their feet by your hands and then take the hands to your head as a mark of respect. It is absolutely that both of you should be physically matched. |

Advance Welcome Wishes To India !!!!
There is no point in getting nervous in coming down to OUR country. I believe most of the parts in India are safer than many US cities.
As far as weather is concerned, it depends on which part of India you planning to visit. In the northern part, winter season is all set to begin within couple of weeks. Its rainy season in Southern part.
As you know Indian culture is bit different than the western, so usually people wont wear ultra modern dresses in India (there are exceptions in bigger cities) but you can wear anything which is comfortable to you. There are no restrictions in touching each other in public but very few people used express their love in public.
Most of the people in India are co-operative and supportive.
I dont think the physical dissimilarities are going to affect you, if both of you are in same page. |
