Heyy... Its really cool that u have decieded not to take Goa as the only option.... well a month r two would be great... u will have enough time to explore the untouched part.... ok Now Mumbai and delhi... r so touched and its Hi-fi city life which probably u can find in ur own place...
Frankly speaking.. iam so happy when people say i want to c the untouched... and obviously which is not being promoted due to the change in cultural standards.
Ok... iam not a real expert on all this.... but have learnt a bit about ancient architecture in India... so here u r.... first of all let me tell u.... India is different from many countries... its where Hinduism and Buddish were born. It was ruled at different periods by different people... so u see a lot of change in style if u take the cultural side. And a same idea will be treated different around India. Temple r the major cultural side still remainging.... coz main believes and ideas have died along the way. Now abt temples.... different regions have different styles of building... some in the west have real tall ones where as to the east will small.. I would advise u to start from north and move down wards to south or start from south and go to the north... and since u have plenty of time this will really work for u. So from north u may start with the Golden Temple...this is a very important sikh temple... again sikhism was born here. Its in Punjab.. a very beautiful temple painted in gold.U cud go to delhi from there... Red fort, Gandhi's memorial site where he was cremated, then Jama masjid... largest mosque in India. Then the Humayun's tomb, the Qutub Minar, the parliment house and ofcourse the India gate. From Delhi head straight to the most awaited thing of ur trip "THE TAJ MAHAL" in Agra.. u got some otherplaces to visit here as well. The Agra fort,Sikandra, Itmad-Ud-Daulah, Fathehpur sikri or Radha Swami Samadhi.... u will find a lot of Islmaic Influnce here due to the invading of Arbas long back. U can then move onto Jaipur, another not to miss place in India... a lot of forts and palaces.... the most beautiful one Hawa Mehal.. The wind palace, the Amber fort palace, Jantar Matar... a very ancient astronomic Observative.. U will find a very ineresting atmosphere in Jaipur....From there u could head to Mount Abu in Rajasthan.. plenty of temples r there. Bikanre, Udaipur, Ajmer or Bundi In Rajasthan.. choose any one or two of these.. u dont wanna waste a plenty of time just seeing forts, temples and palaces there. Move Onto Gujarat... Where Mahatma Gandhi was born.... u could go ahead and see the most ancient civilisation excavation site called Dholavira, if u want 2 or there is Sun temple. U will again find a cultural difference in Gujarat.... I dont think i can really put it all out here... its a lot of stuffs... |

Culture tours... you have 3 options.
a) Do Jaipur (rajastan, deserts and camel fairs and palaces) Agra (taj mahal), New Delhi(forts, national capital monuments), Amritsar(Golden Temple)
b) Himalayas (some places in Himachal Pradesh with Buddist monastaries, Dalai Lama, temples, awesome atmosphere)
c) South India : Tamilnadu(temples, pondicherry - aurobindo ashram, churches, forts, palaces) and Kerala (nature, forts, synogogue, churches, backwater houseboat rides)
Take your pick. Make sure you read your 'Lonely Planet" by then! Welcome to Incredible India! |

I did study abroad in India for two months. Must see is Jaipur and Agra, althugh touristy compared to other places. I was in Hyderabad a lot, which is a medium-sized city with some historical architecture. It's very unique because of the mix of Muslim and Hindu culture. I didn't get to go to the mountains in the north, but I would if it were at all possible. |

One way to solve the puzzle is to base yourself in one of the better known destinations such as Goa or kerala or Rajathan and plan short trips around which will take you into the interiors of the country, which most tourists do not see. Of course this will limit you to one region of India, but then exploring the whole of India in one go is tough. You could check out www.indiaresortssurvey.com for lots of options on holiday accommodation across India. |

Goa has two parts. The beach part which has the rave/drug scene and the Old Goa - which is a quiet, quaint little city with some nice cafes and restaurants. There are also some UN World Heritage ruins, churches near Old Goa. Definitely stop by Fort Cochin if you make your way south. Cochin has some nice progressive art galleries, folk Indian theaters and the art scene seemed pretty thriving when I was there. If you need help deciding, buy a LP India guide. LP is truly the travel bible - 95% of the info I got from my LP was accurate. It'll really help you in deciding which cities and routes to take. My friends and I took the Mumbai - Goa - Kerala Bangalore route. We essentially went down the western coast and provinces of India. The part of Goa I went to was pretty beat up with ravers. If that's not your thing, I would skip it. The water and sand wasn't even that great - although I did see a body get cremated right on the beach though!
India is amazing. It was one of my dreams to go too. Go well, be well. |
