hi peter,
i would suggest you to go to wayanad which is the border district of kerala to karnataka.take mysore road-nanjanagud-gundlupet and from there take right turn to sultanbathery(it forms the wayanad district)

it is about 280 kms from bangalore and 6hrs journey.the reason why i suggest wayanad is it is still not commercialized fully like ooty(if you further proceed straight toward bandipur forest from gundlupet without taking a right turn u will reach ooty which is 255 kms from bangalore).

you get to see about 3-4 water falls, two lakes, two mountain trekking spots(every body can trek it need not worry), two animals national park and its full of tea plantations.

all situated within a radius of 30kms.if u have your own transport u can cover couple of falls and tea estates on day one and comeback to you hotel and next day u can proceed to other places and so on.

kalpetta is the district head quarters and u can find plenty of cheap and standard hotels for staying

if it is for 2-3 days you better go beyond the usual tourist places of mysore or coorg which will be crowded during these times and u can always cover these places in 1-11/2 day trip....for further details u can mail me
