UDIPI SRIKRISHNA'S IDOL IS FACING WEST..

There is no front door to this mutt. Instead there is a window through which once could always get the darshana of the idol from outside the mutt. The main entrance to the Mutt is on the southern side. As one enters, on the right side there is a tank called the Madhwa Pushkarani. This tank has stone steps all round and a Mantapa in the centre. Inside the sanctum sanctorum, the idol of Sri Krishna is installed facing west.

First of all it is not Udipi - it is UDUPI.
Next, it is not idole - it is DEITY. Idole doesnt exist only Idol does! Plus there is a difference between Idol and a Deity.

That apart, here's the answer:
The preisiding deity of Udupi Krishna Mutt, Sri Krishna was originally facing East (like in most temples). Some one else wrote here that the temple does not have a main door at all! It is wrong. The sanctum sanctorum has a main door facing East. But it is sealed and is not used by anyone. Marking that place is a small statue of the Lord made of pancha loha, as we enter the garbha griha area. This area faces the Madhva Sarovara, as someone else has pointed in these posts.
When the caste conscious Madhvas forbade Kanakadasa (who was a kuruba (sheep rearer) by birth), he stood a little distance away, behind the mutt and began to sing with great devotion. (This means Kanakadasa was facing East, standing in the West side of the mutt).
The Lord who understands true intentions of every body (as He is seated in everyones heart as Paramatma), knowing full well the great devotion of Kanakadasa, wanted to bestow a great honour on His devotee and hence turned around. In other words, the Lord who was facing East turned WEST!
This created a small window like hole in the mutt's outer wall as well as the garbha griha! And through these holes, Kanakadasa, the great devotee was able to have darshana of Sri Krishna.
The hole on the outer wall is today christened as Kanakana Kindi. And the hole in the sanctum sanctorum is named Navagraha Kindi.
So, as on today, the deity of Sri Krishna is facing WESTERN direction. Hope this helps.
