go with sammy... an eight yr experience cant be wrong !! :)
i am here for 29 yrs... and my take - dont go for paharganj. They are cheap, and hence, not so clean. Else there are guest houses like mushrooms all over the city... the price ranges !!
happening places - I wonder if the idea if just shopping or checking the pulse of city. Check out places like kasbah(Gk), Shalom(VV), actually so many of them, for some parties.
For shopping - dont miss the great india place in Noida... all under one roof !!! |

Well being a girl I can tell you the most happening places in Delhi are:
1) Connaught Place *Good eating joints, big brand showrooms*
2) Janpath *Located a min walk from Connaught Place, If you're a good bargainer this is a shopping paradise for you*
3) Greater Kailash M-Block Market *HIGHLY RECOMMENDED PLACE*
4) Shoppers Stop Ansal Plaza *one word for this place A-M-A-Z-I-N-G shopping*
5) Hauz Khas Shops *Taste of Old Delhi in New Delhi with good people around.. shops, eatery all in one place*
6) Lajpat Nagar *Best for shoes and bags shopping*
These places that I have suggested you are the most happening places you would find teenaged and college going people shopping and having a ball of a time!! I would not recommend Sarojni Nagar or Karol Bagh coz they are so crowded that it ruins your shopping experience.
To be honest I won't suggest going to Old Delhi mainly coz therez a lot of chaos there but if you really wanna visit then your best bet is Chandni Chowk for its traditional people running traditional shops but yes you would get really good food there, however, with the chaos and everything I'd stay stick with the New Delhi suggestion that I have listed above.
