The Original name before British came it was Kalikatta and it was changed by prononciation to Calcutta. read the origin of this name -

The names Kolkata and Calcutta were probably based on Kalikata, the name of one of the three villages (Kalikata, Sutanuti, Gobindapur) in the area before the arrival of the British. "Kalikata", in turn, is an anglicised version of Kalikshetra ("Land of the goddess Kali"). However, other theories exist regarding the origin of the name. The original settlement of the city was claimed to be located beside a khal, meaning a canal in Bengali. Khal might have given rise to the name. Again, the place was known for the manufacture of shell-lime and the name could have been derived from lime (kali) and burnt shell (kata). Alternatively, the name may have been derived from the Bengali term kilkila ("flat area"). The government of West Bengal changed the official name of the city from Calcutta to Kolkata; the new name was legalised in 2001. A number of other Indian cities have enacted similar name changes.-

Night Wolf
Kolkatta is a recent change in the name of the city of India. It belongs to the state West Bengal.

It was called as Calcutta before and it was the capital city of India until 1947 i.e. until the independence of India.

The reason for the change in name is because the bengalis (people who live in calcutta) pronounce the name calcutta as kolkatta. So they officially changed the name.

Hope the information was clear and helpful. Do come back to choose a best answer for your question. Bye

night wolf made a small mistake. the capital of india changed from calcutta to new delhi in 1911 not after 1947. it was called as calcutta since it was formed. the natives prononced calcutta as kolkata, so the name is changed and is called "kolkata" now.

zen
Nope..it's known as Kolkata now...officially....earlier only the locals callled it Kolkata in their native language but it was Calcutta on papers as per the name given by the British during their reign in India

lucky
at present..it is known as Kolkata, earlier it was calcutta

Sandeep
It was known as Kolkata in earlier days. Infact 3 villages named Sutanati, Govindapur & Kolikata was bought by the East India Company to form a trade point & base. It was named Kolkata. Later the British renamed it as Calcutta due to help their pronunciation. However like some other cities of India, Kolkata was officially given back the old name.
