Take train upto Jammu from Delhi. Once in Jammu you need to hire a cab or a taxi up to Katra.

Let me clarify that my answer will be lenghty and for a budget travel, so kindly bear with me. :)

I presume you have already got the tickets for Delhi booked. Assuming that, and given the available direct connections between Bangalore and New Delhi, I see you would reach New Delhi/H. Nizamuddin atmost by 10:35-11:00.

As there are not many trains and/or buses that start during this time vicinity for Jammu, I recommend you spend the day site seeing select places in Delhi like Nizamuddin Dargah, Red Fort, Jantar Mantar, etc. Use facilities @ waiting rooms/dormitory/low-cost hotel near the railway station to freshen up. Mind you hotels in Delhi are unlike those in South. There is no 24hr check in facility. The day starts at 12noon irrespective of when you check in. For example, if you checkin at 10AM, by 4PM, you will be charged 2days room rent. Hence, I was asking you to get into a cheap good hotel near Paharganj near New Delhi rly. stn.

Post freshening up, you could check out and put the luggage in the Rlys cloack room. Then go site-seeing. Ensure that you are back at New Delhi rly. station by 18:30. Collect your luggage from the cloack room and be ready for the UTTAR SAMPARK KRANTI EXP. to take you to JAMMU. Details below:

2445 NEW DELHI - UDHAMPUR UTTAR SAMPARK KRANTI EXP.
DoR: DAILY
NEW DELHI d 20:50
JAMMU TAWI a 06:15

After you reach JAMMU, check in to a hotel or the choultry run by the Vaishno Devi Shrine Board. Availability could be an issue, so try booking in advance. Details at:

http://maavaishnodevi.org/r_accom.asp

Freshen up and head straight to KATRA. You get bus/taxi/shared-taxi services right outside the railway station at JAMMU. Once you reach KATRA take an auto to base camp approx. 5kms from the bus station @ KATRA. It takes approx. 1h30m to reach KATRA from JAMMU. Assuming you reach KATRA by 12:00, I can tell you that it would take atleast 12hours to go up to BHAWAN for VAISHNOJI DARSHAN, BHERUNATHJI DARSHAN and back to KATRA. So, you should be back in KATRA by 08:00 the following morning with an overnite stopover at the top. Head straight to JAMMU to your hotel/choultry. Rest for the day or visit a few temples in JAMMU to be ready to board train back to NEW DELHI. Train details:

2446 UDHAMPUR - NEW DELHI UTTAR SAMPARK KRANTI EXP.
DoR: DAILY
JAMMU TAWI d 20:40
NEW DELHI a 06:05

On the way back from NEW DELHI, you could choose one of the following trains:

2628 NEW DELHI - BANGALORE CITY KARNATAKA EXP.
DoR: DAILY
NEW DELHI d 21:15 [Day 1]
BANGALORE CITY a 13:40 [Day 3]

2650 H. NIZAMUDDIN - YESVANTHPUR KARNATAKA SAMPARK KRANTI EXP.
DoR: MON, TUE, THU, SAT, SUN
H. NIZAMUDDIN d 06:45 [Day 1]
YESVANTHPUR a 19:00 [Day 2]

2630 H. NIZAMUDDIN - YESVANTHPUR KARNATAKA SAMPARK KRANTI EXP.
DoR: WED, FRI
H. NIZAMUDDIN d 08:55 [Day 1]
YESVANTHPUR a 06:20 [Day 3]

2648 H. NIZAMUDDIN - COIMBATORE KONGU EXP.
DoR: TUE
H. NIZAMUDDIN d 08:55 [Day 1]
BANGALORE CITY a 01:10 [Day 3]

2648 H. NIZAMUDDIN - BANGALORE CITY RAJDHANI EXP.
DoR: MON, TUE, FRI, SAT
H. NIZAMUDDIN d 20:50 [Day 1]
BANGALORE CITY a 06:35 [Day 3]

I would recommend, you again do a days site-seeing in DELHI this time by hiring a taxi for a day, and opt the KARNATAKA EXP. which departs NEW DELHI at 21:15 to reach BANGALORE at 13:40 on the third day.

NOTE:
a. Ensure you get confirmed reservations done in advance.
b. Given that its winter and chances of serious delays due to heavy fog are high, ensure you plan connecting trains carefully. I have factored this issue. ;)
c. Ensure you carry heavy woollens and sports shoes for the climb. Climate change en route is notorious.

Walking from the Katra to Bhawan is the Best Way around 15 km

TRAIN is the best way.
Frst of all goto new delhi railway station enquiry & get details about various trains to jammu.
select one train according to your timings & get your reservations done on same day and wait for the train until then u can refresh yourself.

Divakar J
You can go to Jammu via train. There are several train going to Jammu from Delhi in evening. You can book your ticket on internet suitable to your arrival time in Delhi from Bangalore. For booking or enquiry you can visit :www.indianrail.gov.in or www.irctc.co.in

From Jammu you will get bus service to reach Katra. The starting point of Vaishno Devi yatra.

If you find difficult to get train reservation. Then there are bus service available from Delhi to Katra via Jammu. Both Private and state roadways are operating this service. State roadways stand is at Kashmere Gate. Most of the private operators are running it from Red Fort.
