TAMLUK (WEST BENGAL), The largest district in the country - Midnapore - in West Bengal was bifurcated to facilitate smooth administration.
Earlier, the largest district was ratnagiri in maharastra. It was bounded by raigad and all the way over the entire konkan region till sawantwadi on the maharashtra-goa border. Unfortunately, it lost the status as the largest district in India after is was bifuricated into the two separate districts of ratnagiri and sindhudurg to facilitate for better governance and administration

TAMLUK (WEST BENGAL), The largest district in the country - Midnapore - in West Bengal was today formally bifurcated to facilitate smooth administration.

The new districts, Midnapore East and Midnapore West, will have four divisions each. The total number of districts in the State now stood at 19.
the lartgest district now is Kachchh (old spelling Kutch, sometime also spelled Cutch) is a district of Gujarat state in western India. Covering an area of 45,612 km2, it is the largest district in the state of Gujarat and the second largest in India. Kachchh which literally means surrounded by water, this district is surrounded by gulf of kachchh and arabian sea in south and west. North and eastern parts are surrounded by Great and Small rann (desert) of Kachchh.

While respecting the other answers it is my understanding that BASTAR in Madhya Pradesh (has it now gone to Jharkhand state?) IS the largest district in India. It has the unique distinction of having very large -the highest tribal population also. The size of Bastar district is more than whole of Kerala state as per what I read in the Geography books and Governement websites. Please check it out.
