What's your impression of the banks of Ganges River in India? |
Previously it's always been a sacred and quite beautiful place in my mind according to all the books and poems, until recently I read about somebody's travel log where he describes how disturbing it could be seeing things like people brushing teeth with fingers, open cremations right on the bank and the fact that there're people lying there for days even months just to die.
Do you like the place if you've been there? |

The ganges is very dirty in varanasi but if you go upstream into the mountains it really isn't too bad. I swam regularly in it when i was in rishikesh without any problems although it can be dangerous as it is very fast flowing.
Even though it is dirty in varanasi it is still a truly magical place. |

Its dirty and fantastically crowded. To see the thousands and thousands bathing in the dirty water, well, even though I have a deep respect for the Hindu faith, quite frankly, it will put you right off breakfast.....
Holy river or not, there are just so many dangerously unsanitary things going on there. Government and Hindu authorities should really get together and put in place strict new regulations for a modern era.......... |

That is the fact of life. The person must have visited Varanasi which is considered a holy place. Many Hindus believe that if they are cremated on the banks of the Ganges at Varanasi, they go to heaven. It is now a business. As far as brushing teeth with fingers, you have to understand that many people are poor and can't afford certain items that we take for granted like toothbrush or toothpaste. Also, the government is apathetic. They are changing but it is hard to change beliefs.
All in all, the river Ganga is very beautiful, once you move away from the cities. |

True, very unfortunate that we Indians, do not know how to safegaurd something sacred which is close to our hearts. It is true that there has been lot of mess around, call it a sewer or dirty canal - which is the result of we Indians, aided by not so serious attempts by people in power.
Do you one fact about Ganges - even today, when it is so dirty or whatever u call it ?
Even if you store this water in a closed container for years, the water wont get spoiled - do you know the great modern scientists till date could not find out the reason for such a great value of Ganges - Simply because, it is the matter of heart not just heard for billions of Indians - not just a dirty canal, please. |

Sacred or not, the only time I've been to India the Ganges smelt like an open sewer - indeed, was an open sewer |

The Indian people live in a superstitious fairy tale. Not only do they think the Ganges can't be made unclean, they also let rats eat up most of their food supply. They are absolute idiots.
If you want to visit a great eastern civilization that lives in the real world, try China. |
