I'm from HawaiI and worked in the industry. Tourism, if controled is fine and there is little downside, but when greed (which it almost always does) takes over it can be devastating.

Unique and interesting cultures are homogenized and there is no way to stop the process if you have a large temporary population of tourists. Eventually indigenous the population gets jaded to the individual tourist and they tend to become hostile. This ultimatly leads to the folks that "live" wherever we are talking about to becoming more antagonistic even internally. The original population eventually gets "cranky". Also, a certain disregard for individuals almost always seems to be generated by local folks..."it's only a tourist; Welcome, enjoy your stay and leave your money, but leave."

Overall, I would say the advance of tourism is unavoidable and with all the new avenues of communication on the planet and the growth of large multi-national corps, all the cultures of the world are eventually going to be very similar. There will be minor superficial differences, but for the most part life in Chicago will be similar to life in Bangkok which will be similar to life in Stockholm which will be similar to life in Tonga...ad infinitum. The homoginization of world cultures will be sad for the adventurer, but it may very well bring an end to war which, in itself, is worth the loss.

At this point everybody who has the facility to should go out and see as much of the world as they can while it is still somewhat splintered. I am in SE Asia and I can go to Starbucks then pick up some new gear at the Gap, see the latest Hollywood flick, read the newest best seller, pop on my radio and hear the newest dreck from Britteney, grab a burger at Burger King, Mc Nuggets, or some grease from KFC, get household goods from Lotus, Boots, or any other clone mall retailers. But, still, I can feed an elephant right outside the mall. I can take a thrill ride with a drunk tuk tuk driver jacked up on rice wine. I eat strange in exotic foods including bugs if I wish. There is lots to see in the world and while tourism rapidly helps bring an end to unique cultures, it is probably the natural next step...it should be enjoyed and profited from.

You spend a lotta money.

The following are the disadvantages:
1. Infrastructural cost is high but essential to bring in tourists.
2. Constant density of tourists not assured for the high input cost
3. Packages which would assure the benefit in tourism industry as a whole are seasonal.
4. The interest of the tourists and the culture of a country do not match.

over development of destination countries. Though most home governments will welcome the investment/ income.
