It starts from chennai beach from 345 pm and it takes about 5 hours to reach pondy. Think it is a passenger train. Bus will be convenient it takes 2 and half hours from Thiruvanmiyur..

I really dont know the timings of the trains but there is train to pondicherry which passes through chennai IN nellore it leaves at 10.30pm and reaches chennai after 2/3hrs so please check at egmore railway station the train name is nagercoil exp which travels between Ahemadabad to nager coil
