You have a variety of choices to choose from:

HA1-First Class A.C-Most Costliest
A1-Second Class A.C
AS1-Third Class A.C
FC-First Class
ACCC- A.C Chair Car
SL-Sleeper Class
II/2S-Second Class Sitting.

Are you a tourist? I've only travelled on one train in India and that was in 2nd Class Air Conditioned. If I went again I think I would travel in the non-A/C. If my experience was typical, the trouble with the A/C is that you can hardly see out of the windows which rather reduces the purpose of going by train and seeing something of the countryside.

My Indian friends, probably concerned for my European sensibilities ;-) convinced me to go A/C but I think you would be OK in any class because people on long-distance trains have paid a lot to be there (by local standards) and Indian people I always found to be very respectful of others and helpful.

Might be different on local trains but then you won't get A/C on those anyway.

You also really need to book in advance, particularly on popular routes. You can do this online. And don't make any plans for meetings or the like - delays are guaranteed if you have a deadline.

Have a great time!

Ask your purse......AC 1st class to sleeper class.. AC Ist class charges may be nearer to Air services.

The most 'luxurious' class is called 'air-con' or 'chair' class, and this can come in handy during long rides through the hot Indian climate. Most trains seems circa 1960 with windows that are yellowed. But you should try first and or second class at least once to really get the feel of India. They have fans on the ceiling which actually work sometimes. But you can go between cars or try to get near a window if you want to cool yourself down with a blast of hot Indian air. On all classes of trains, you can watch the train track go by through the bottom of the toilet, so watch wear you step if you're ever walking the line in India!

Note: Keep alert if you are getting off at a particular stop - sometimes trains can take off quite abruptly. Be prepared for your stop.

If you are northbound go for 3AC southbound even SL would do. B'coz everyone seems to be a relative of Laloo right from Patna upto Delhi and claim their stake on reserved seats in SL compatments. They have sapred 3AC and 2AC fortunately.

I'D SAY A/C BUT THEN YOU GOT TO BE VERY CAREFULL YOU CAN GET SICK AT THE OTHER END OF YOUR JOURNEY,THE LEVEL OF FALLING SICK ARE HIGH BECAUSE THERE IS LOT OF POLUTION IN THERE.SOME ONE WITH A BAD COLD TRAVELING ON ONE OF IT COULD PASS IT ON UNKNOWINGLY,
BE CAREFUL.
